I just ordered a few Chubby Darters for walleye through the ice. Is the 2" - 1/2oz. size the best? Also, what size trebles are on this size? I couldn't get myself to buy a lure shorter than 2" for eyes. I have this problem of bigger baits bring bigger fish...LOL. I like the idea of a slower fall for the presentation. Do they swim similar to the other jigging minnows?

I use both the original Sumo Chubby and the new baby Chubby.

Mood is the big deal, they may hammer a big Chubby or they may just eyeball it and chase it around. Switching to the little chubby is a plan if they are lookers, it can convert the lookers into hookers. Hooks are good on SALMO lures but if you wish try a triple grip long shank on the rear of the Chubby go for it.

For Sumo perch have a few drop links made up ahead of time so you can switch the front hook out quickly and add the link. I save up my quick snaps from stingers and make drop links from them using a Rat Finky or a plain gold hook, they change out much faster with the snaps, especially with cold fingers.

The rear hook can be removed when drop linking fish or add a single long shank tipped with whatever works that day. When you use a drop link slow things down or it will tangle on the line. A waggle & pause & waggle movement triggers a lot of fish, bounce the mud once in a while too. The Chubby is primarily a decoy on the drop link rig and the drop link tipped with the bait of the day is the business end of this style approach. Works great too.

Sumo Chubby??? That just tickles my funny bone! Never a vanilla post from you Eddy! Do you know what size the trebles are on the Sumo, maybe #8? I will try them with a little Dr. J. and if they don't like it, sometimes downsizing the hooks has worked for me as long as they aren't getting off before I can grab them.
