Hi

Labor Day came and went - the unofficial threshold of "fall fishing" is upon us! The surface temperature is hovering around 68 degrees currently - pretty normal for this time of year. As the temperature drops, the walleye bite on Mille Lacs traditionally picks up. Currently, our success has depended on the wind... if the wind is blowing, we're probably going to do OK. The top approach right now is a slip bobber/leech on a shallow (12 feet or less) rock reef. Andersons Reef, Rocky Reef, Banana Reef and 3-mile have each been decent in the right wind. Mobility is important - we've found that after catching a fish or 2 it's necessary to move. Rarely are we able to take more than 2 walleye off a single anchor set. Casting crankbaits has also turned a few fish - look for this technique to become more effective as the water cools. The night trolling bite is still slow by "fall" standards. Smallmouth bass are still hot on the rock reefs - toss a 4 inch tube or grub around the biggest rocks you can find. Yellow and white have been the best colors so far this week.

Yes, we still have big leeches.

The surface temperature is 68 degrees.

The reef markers will remain on the water until about the end of September. Even if you run a GPS with a map chip, this would be a good time to spend a few hours marking out your fall trolling runs... it's much easier to do in the daylight with the buoys in place! Remember... the water level is down significantly from when your map chip was produced.

Finally, The blonde reported for her University placement examination which consists of “yes/no” type questions? She took her seat in the examination hall, stares at the question paper for five minutes, and then in a fit of inspiration took her purse out, removed a coin and started tossing the coin and marking the answer sheet -Yes For Heads and No for Tails. Within half an hour she is all done whereas the rest of the class was sweating it out. During the last few minutes, she was seen desperately
Throwing the coin, swearing and sweating. The moderator, alarmed, approached her and asked what was going on. "I finished the exam in half an hour. But," she said, "I am rechecking my answers."

Have a great weekend,
