: I know Scott's the boss, but????
FlyBoy 02-28-2004, 08:00 PM I had a post from yesterday get nuked, and I have no idea why.
I don't know if it was my question, or the replies my post received?
I understand and respect why someone has to police a site like this, without it total chaos would take over.
But if one of the moderators think it worthy to dust a post, wouldn't an email to the poster also be in order?
It seems kind of gutless to just nuke a post with no explaination. I may make the same mistake tomorrow?????????????????????
I miss the old WC

My inquiry into why my post got removed went unanswered.

FlyBoy 02-29-2004, 10:30 AM How about the moderator reply to the post as to why it was nuked, then lock it? That way everyone gets a lesson? Probably too simple.

Besham 02-29-2004, 12:16 PM Why should he have to? Do you think he has the time to do all of that? You would need a full time judge to do all of that. The rules are here and if you want to post stick to them. I like the fact that the politicos are gone.A couple of guys here were all about lecturing on their views. Notice MOST of them are gone. Apparently fishing was a distant sideline. Still a few around that try to sneak in their hits but at least its not the crazy stuff of last year. If I want to discuss politics or religion I can go to the local bar or barbershop. If I get nasty I might get a punch in the nose. (The other way of censorship!) Also I'm sure sometimes misakes are made. You are not sitting across a table from someone and writting and communication skills are varied. I've re read some of my posts and thought that it was my fault when people misunderstood things. I'm also sure that these posts are often read very quickly . I don't take it personally and try to do it better next time.

perchjerker 02-29-2004, 12:59 PM This is how it usually goes.
I can only give you my point of view, what I do and how I act.
If a post is obivously not in the realm of the guidelines Scott has set, its gone, no warning, nothing.
If it is a post that may be borderline, I will send an alert around about it and get some opinions whether or not it should go, be locked, sent to the boneyard, whatever. Then make a decision.
If I think the poster deserves an explanation, I will email him (if I can, sometimes he/she is not registered) and tell him why. Im not going to email every jerk and kiss his butt trying to tell him why. Sorry if that is blunt, but thats the way it is.
As far as the post that flyboy asked about to start this thread, Im sorry, I dont know what it was about. To say the the moderators are gutless, well, thats pretty low.
I do like the idea of locking things and saying why. Really depends, though. Sometimes that can start a whole new thread with the lynch mob drilling the moderators. We really dont need that. Sometimes its better just to move on. We try really hard to run a good, clean, fun site. We dont get paid, we do it because we love this site as much as you do.
Hope you understand.

Gutless? No. Triggerhappy? I'm starting to think so. A heated argument is no reason to delete a thread. If you start removing anything even mildly controversial, you might as well just shut the forum down entirely, because nobody is learning anything then. No person should ever be targeted by a personal attack, but their opinions should be fair game. If I can't tell someone they're wrong, what's the point?
Now I know what moderators go through. I currently moderate one small forum and used to moderate another forum that sees far more posts per day than WC ever has. I know it's not easy, but there is such a thing as a bad moderator. Just because moderators volounteer out of the goodness of their hearts doesn't mean the members of a forum should have to put up with someone doing a bad job. I need to clarify that statement by saying that I personally haven't had a post removed recently so I have no personal beef with anyone, but I do see a lot of other posts being removed and a lot of what appear to be level headed quality posters wondering why.
Now whatever your response, if any, I'm going to let this drop because I don't want you to feel like I'm attacking you. You stuck your neck out to reply to this and I don't want to hammer on you for that. I know my opinion may not be politically correct here, but I guess I feel it needs to be stated, even if it gets nuked shortly thereafter.
Perhaps if you see fit we can continue this conversation via email.

perchjerker 02-29-2004, 02:32 PM Was it a heated argument that caused the thread to get deleted?
I dont know. Like I said, I didnt see the thread. So I was speaking in general terms.
You sound like you had something to do with the thread in question. I am fishing with no sonar here. I have no idea what depth I am in LOL.
If you would like to email me and tell me what this is all about, I would like to know.
All I am tryiing to tell you is how I and most of the other morderators handle questionable posts.
And please dont think I am going to nuke your post merely because you stated your opinion.
The buck stops with Scott.

I think we agree (I don't come here to read politics or religion either) My point was, if the offending poster knew why it was nuked, maybe less nuking would be required. The forums I've moderated over the years, if I had time to nuke it, I also had time to explain why I nuked it. Thats my angle, your mileage may vary.
PerchJerker:
Thanks for stepping up and trying to explain how you see it. Unfortunately I don't have any idea what was in that thread either, I asked about Gary G's motor choice, but I have to think the replies went south.
Sorry everyone, I didn't mean to start a war. I make a concerted effort to stay inside the rules, and felt like I had done something wrong. (and didn't know why)
(my post didn't go to page 3, I searched for it before I asked this question)
Thanks,

SUPERTROLLER 02-29-2004, 07:50 PM If your post was on the general discussion page and it mentioned a motor, it probably got moved to the boats and Motors forum. I don't know why there is such a push on to keep moving posts now. If anyone mentions anything about tournaments,,,,BOOM!,,, it's on the Tournament Forum page. Is it impossible to have a general discussion about tournaments without it being moved? I would think the people wanting specific information about tournaments would belong there,,, not general topics. Same thing has been happening with the boats and motors stuff. Can't we just keep the questions on the forum that the original poster wanted it on? I think this is what most of the recent complaints have been concerning. This is why we think postings are being nuked. They've mostly just been moved to other forums and now we can't find it where it was. This is my take on it anyway. I know I've seen a major increase in locked and moved posts and it's driving me nuts.

Reels 02-29-2004, 08:24 PM I have to agree also. Someone posted a post because he liked a movie and said it moved him. It was gone within an hour. Yes, the movie was religious.
I posted a question why that post was removed. Just asked. That too was dusted within an hour.
Now I know this board is about fishing, but it is friends too. I have been a member here since 96. The general board was developed to have friends talk about off topic subjects. Politics was banned because it was over running the board. We still come here to learn about squirells, hemoriods, and all sort of goofy things that people dont ask in normal conversation.
I know there are a lot more people here now, but it does seem to be cleansed a lot lately.
That being said, we are guests. Scott can run it any way he likes. It is just sad that it is turning this way.

Trailerguy 02-29-2004, 08:53 PM [font color=green size=3][b]It's pretty hard to please everybody all the time, lol. The mods try to please most of the people most of the time I'm sure. If you follow the Canada board, lately it's a haven for bad manners, threads with content having no business being there, and unregistered users who use handles with double meanings that are juvinile to say the least. IMHO the mods need to nuke a lot more posts, just to clean it up.
But that's just me venting!

JLDII 02-29-2004, 10:20 PM John,
I tried to give you a straight forward answer to your question about the Verado and Gary, and a couple unregistered smart aasses decided to turn it into a personal attack on me. The moderators must have decided that this was not a good thing and nuked it. I tried to explain in my post the other day, pretty much the same things Gary explained to you in the other post about which motor he will be running. I'm sorry my "fan" club got your legitimate post nuked. Maybe someday those individuals will grow up enough to learn to sign their names! If ever they do, I'll gladly deal with them the first time I ever meet them face to face. But I'm not holding my breath since they are just a couple of cowards.

perchjerker 03-01-2004, 03:58 AM Just to respond the the moving of posts-
If a post gets moved, there is (supposed to be) a placeholder that stays where the orignal post was with a link to where it was moved to. Thats done so it can be found easily.
That happens automatically by the system.

SUPERTROLLER 03-01-2004, 02:36 PM I agree that there is a placeholder left where the original post had been. What my complaint is, is that it seems a lot of these have been moved lately. I also think that a lot of them COULD have been left where they were in the first place due to the content not being all about tournaments, or boats and motors. Seems like the only thingsd left in general discussion are things that don't concern walleye fishing anymore. This is far different than the way things were in the past. Maybe someone WANTS to have a general discussion of views on Tournaments in general. Does this have to be argued on the tournament pages? Aren't the tournament guys wanting to have that forum for specific tournament questions? I'm thinking amybe we're getting too spread out with the different forums we have now. Just my opinion.

anonamous 03-01-2004, 10:24 PM Why is it that we feel every post must be by a registerd user to have any credibility? I can recall many many writings, sayings, poems and quotes that were signed anon, or author unknown that have brought smiles, wisdom, and just downright entertainment to millions!! If we are secure in our opinions and thoughts, who cares that someone will post back and try to rile you. Instead of stooping to their level, state your case without answering them and calling them names or challenging them to a duel. Your credibility will remain intact and it won't be because you posted your name!! Many times, I think that the nasty posts are laid on us by someone who knows us and our temperments just to get a rise from us, could even be close friends having a laugh at our expense. If everyone does this, then the moderaters will only have to nuke a few posts instead of whole threads. Just a few thoughts, not gospel!!

pwrfshn 03-02-2004, 07:24 AM I'm going to keep this short and sweet, PJ already said how most of us behave as moderators, I rarely make a unilateral decision without consulting at least one other moderator, it is easier that way.
Used to respond to all of the complainers about why "their" post got nuked and it absorbed at least 5 times as much time. I'm all for telling reasonable people why their stuff was deleted. I really get tired of telling the same idiots time after time that feel like saying the same unacceptable stuff.
As I always tell people if something of yours got deleted and you think it was me, I'm registered and you can email me to ask why. I am always happy to discuss this off the boards.
Sorry, but this is a miserable job at times dealing with all of the people that can't seem to figure out the difference between healthy debate of opinions and just outright poor behavior.
At any time if you feel a moderator is not doing an appropriate job, you can email Scott and explain why and he will make a decision based on that. Many times I have thought I was not a fit for the job, this site is like a home to me and I would not let people in my house that behave like some do here.
As far as another site getting many more hits in a day than WC, I'd personally like to know which one. There aren't many sites in general, much less a fishing site, that can boast more hits than WC.
See you on the water,

Reels 03-02-2004, 08:17 AM I agree with you 95%. What is in question here are posts that do not seem to cross that line. To my knowledge, I only have had one post deleted, and that was last week, asking why a post was deleted. I hope I don't fit in the "idiot" pool.
I really don't care that MY post was deleted, I am just worried that as someone else stated, that things may be getting a little trigger happy. If you look at the people responding to this post, we are not helions. Just normal folks.
No need to defend yourselfs as moderators. You all do a great job. I think what people are asking is just to review the procedure and maybe lighten up a little.
As stated before, this is not my site. I am glad it is here, this is just my 2 cents worth.

tbomn 03-02-2004, 08:26 AM As Pj and Mexico have already explained this moderator thing isn't much fun most of the time. We do it because we want this place to be an entertaining, informative, and safe place to read about(and post about) items that relate to walleye fishing. That said, there have been pages added for the purpose of "General Discussion" for other items of interest. I know that some people feel that things aren't the way they would do it, or that things aren't where they would like to have them. I totally understand your feelings. I have the same feelings. I also understand that there must be order, rules, and most of all cooperation in a community for it to function properly. We all know also, that in a community that functions properly there has to be an authority to keep these standards that make the community a properly functioning entity. We as moderators have taken it upon our selves, directed by Mr. Golden, to work as a team to try to accomplish that goal. Everyone has a right to complain about the government, their police force, their work authorities, whatever, but in the end, these things are set up for the good of all. I work with 9 and 10 year old children all day long, and in some cases, when I come to this place at the end of the day, I feel like I am still working with 9 and 10 year old children. The way this site is controlled is for the good of all, much like the way a school is controlled, for the safety and good of all. Some don't like it, but all must cooperate in it's existance. At my school we work on the "Three R's"....Respect, Responsibility, and Right Choices.......maybe we as an online community should work on those "Three R's" also, because as it all boils down to it, that's what it's all about.

At my school we work on the "Three R's"....Respect, Responsibility, and Right Choices.......maybe we as an online community should work on those "Three R's" also, because as it all boils down to it, that's what it's all about.
pwrfshn 03-02-2004, 08:32 AM Reels,
Not sure what post you had nuked, I agree, your stuff hasn't struck me as crossing the line usually. I can't say that for everyone in this thread. The rules are the rules and I can say that everything I have deleted has broken a board rule, end of story.
We do not want to allow discussions as to why we do things as moderators on the message boards, it is not the place for them. PJ and myself, I won't speak for anyone else, (Wheels I am sure would also be receptive to this) would be happy to discuss it privately.
I'm happy to discuss anyone's issues, just not on the boards. I'd be happy to deabte why I do anything with anyone, the other moderators however don't want to have to clean up after my mess either. The last time I got into a "......." contest with someone, Juls moved it to the boneyard because that is where it belongs, in the boneyard. I'm not the first guy to want to follow the rules either sometimes, but I have to also. Been known to offend a person here and there and this is not the place for it.
Sorry,

Reels 03-02-2004, 08:35 AM Your missing the point, and taking this too personally. No one is complaining, we are giving opinions and asking questions. The gist of the conversation here is why are posts being deleted that do not offend your three R's?

With all due respect, you are missing the point, we have heard your suggestions and are telling you that things are deleted for a reason.
They are not deleted by one power hungry individual sitting in a dark room somewhere trying to figure out how to upset everyone drinking coffe behind his/her monitor.
The posts are deleted usually by a group of people making a decision, not an individual. The post is reviewed, if it breaks the rules, it is gone.
Thanks again for your time,

JLDII 03-02-2004, 08:59 AM I understand the job of a moderator has got to be challanging at times. In regards to posters crossing the line, do you keep track of who those individuals are? It seems that more than once a post has been removed because of something a certain person said, and they do it more often than most, almost as if they do it on purpose. When I have noticed it, it is usually from a non-member, (or a member who has logged off). Is there a reason the IP addresses of these repeat offenders can't be tracked, or recorded, and if warranted, blocked, from coming on here and causing trouble. If not blocked, at least a well worded warning might be appropriate. It might make your jobs easier in the long run.

Schnauzer 03-02-2004, 09:03 AM I agree.
Terms such as "idiots" or "9 and 10 year old children" have been thrown around here. I don't think anyone would argue much of the riff raff that gets nuked here shouldn't be axed. I've been hanging out here for a long time and I have thankfully watched personal attacks, unpaid promotions, and political posts get dusted... for years.
The message that doesn't seem to be getting through is the current complaint isn't with those dustings, it is with a new wave of dustings that include entire threads, simply because the moderator doesn't see "value" in them, or others because of what MIGHT happen. Worst of all, I am seeing well thought out legit questions and entire threads get dusted when it seems to make more sense to dust one or two individual posts.
Something has changed. I'm seeing "where did my post go" much more now than I did in the old days. I've said it myself. To Scott's credit, he responded to me via e-mail. Unfortunately I disagree but I do appreciate the fact he took the time to visit with me. It is obviously his site and he can always do what ever he wants to do with it.
I'm confident my intellect ranges far beyond the local 9 and 10 year olds and I am also confident I'm not an idiot. I'm pretty sure I have never personally attacked anyone on WC, I have never included a link or sales pitch for a product I represent, yet I have seen several of the threads I initiated get dusted before I could see ANY replies. When threads do get dusted, nobody ever seems to know who dusted them or why. There must be a dusting fairy on WC :-)
Take a look at who is expressing concern here. It is mostly a collection of registered users and/or "old timers" on this board. Something has changed.

pwrfshn 03-02-2004, 09:03 AM Jack,
All of those things happen, but it is very time consuming to do. In the long run it may be better, but we also have jobs that need attending to.
I've got my own list of "most unwanted", but it is not something we want to be in the business of unless we really have a good reason.
There are some people on the Canadian Board about to find themselves shut out from the wonderful world of WC.
There are others that are currently on a watch list, it is really too bad that they can't behave like mature people when in public.
Thanks for the advice,

pwrfshn 03-02-2004, 09:16 AM To all of those "old timers" who feel their threads have been deleted unfairly, let me know PRIVATELY what they were about and what you had posted and I will tell you if I deleted it and why.
That is all I can offer you, sorry again.

Golden 03-02-2004, 10:26 AM OK.. sheesh
ALL of us have full time jobs, we do this when we can as best we can.
We absolutely do not have time to give reasons for each and every post that gets nuked.
I'd have to guess that 90% of the time people know why they are nuked so it would be a waste of 90% of our time to explain it to them.. as for the other 10%... if you have a question you have my email address... ask me the question.
Starting another arguement on the message boards about why a post was nuked isn't going to solve anything, more than likely that post will get nuked also and that just makes you madder so you post again... and it goes on and on.
We do the best we can, we don't pretend to be perfect, at times good posts get nuked because of all the trash inside them would take longer to prune than the moderators or myself can take to prune and after some threads are pruned, they just don't make any sense when you try to read them... so the whole thread gets nuked instead.
It's not life or death people, it's a message board run by people and that in itself means there will be mistakes.
If any of you guys that are constantly complaining would like to invest the time to make this messagee board any better by becoming a moderator, email me.
Otherwise... we will continue to do the best we can and make mistakes now and then and we hope everyone will look at us as trying to do a job that most people don't want to do.
It's MUCH easier to complain than it is to help out.
So... all this being said... we are doing the best we can and if you think we are charging you too much for what you are getting.. .let me know.

I researched successful fishing sites before making my own to see how successful operations ran. There are no fishing sites on the planet that even come close to this one. The next best (at the time) was the bass fishing home page and it had less than half of this sites stats. In fact, if you exclude sites with a 'pictorial theme' i don't recall any other site getting more visitors and unique pageviews than WC.

pwrfshn 03-02-2004, 10:33 AM Got one email from you and responded to it, did you get it back.
As long as we are going to Digger Daves or the Linebacker, I'll buy.
:)
Just checked, email is good. I get all my alert emails! :(
