The Asian carp is a major worry for fisheries biologists and state officials around the Great Lakes.
But not for Wisconsin Gov. Jim Doyle, the incoming chairman of the Council of Great Lakes Governors. Rather than help pay the final installment of $1.8 million for a permanent $8.5 million electric barrier in the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal, a link to Lake Michigan and the Great Lakes, Doyle has passed the buck.
The noxious carp and the electric fence, said Doyle's spokesman, is a federal problem. Doyle nixed any Wisconsin financial help for the barrier. Illinois is contributing $1.7 million. The other Great Lakes states were each expected to cough up $250,000.
Doyle's stance surprised Ohio Gov. Bob Taft, the outgoing chairman of the governor's group, who has committed Ohio funding to the unique barrier. Expect the two governors to soon have a long chat about invasive species.
