Just curious if anyone can give me some tips on how they flip jigs into weeds or trees. I fish alot on Devils Lake in North Dakota and really haven't tried it much but I also like attempting to fish bass on alot of Minnesota lakes. Any tips on the best reels or practice steps taken to master this method would be appreciated......

Pitching is mainly done by feel and the timing of it all but I'll try to give you some description. The best way I know of to pitch is to let a lil lead out about 6" or less out and place the rod at a 45 degree angle pointing towards the water. Depending on the length of the rod and the distance to the water you might have to bend your elbow to keep the bait and rod tip just above the water. You next start to bend your wrist/elbow to bring the rod tip closer to you promptly reverse movement and snap your wrist away from you. As far as the release of the line its dependent on how and where you wnat to cast. The pitch is best for getting in right under brush and then its a feel and timing. With the right wrist snap (again feel here) you can have the bait go in lowly and then have it climb then drop straight down. Now this is teh generic way to do it and probably the best way to learn however once you begin to get the feel a side arm pitch can be as accurate or more so and can have a longer range.
I am also from Devils Lake and have found that pitching jigs is a very effective way to catch walleyes - especially along weedlines. I generally use a 1/4 ounce leadhead jig tipped with a "sassy shad" or power bait on light spinning gear. Throw it out like any crank and twitch it back to the boat. It takes a little getting used to and a bunch of missed fish before a guy can get the hang of it, but once an angler gets the "feel" this method can be deadly. Good luck.
