There is a god after all. Went on our first fly-in experience last week, June 1st - 5th. We found out about the DUI thing to late to file any paperwork so it was a roll of the dice. We crossed at International Falls. We all had passports, we were polite, no hats, no sunglasses. But here is the kicker. At the border, we were asked to pull aside and go inside to see immigration. Not good, we thought the worst possible thing was about to happen. We didn't panic though. The immigration officer took all of our passports and asked some basic questions. He left for 15 minutes. Came back and asked some more questions and this same routine went on for about an hour. While I was up walking around, I could see back into his office and the passports were laying on his desk and he was drinking a cup of coffee. After an hour and 15 minutes, he comes out, hands us our passports and tells us to have a great trip. So what does that tell you that he was doing. Nothing but messing with us. The DUI that our member had was only 5 1/2 years old, so he could have been stopped. But thankfully he wasn't. Maybe that will give some other readers some hope if they need it. The fishing, by the way, was tough. We went to the Wabakimi Provincial Park with Pipestone Outfitters. A great outfitter, but the fish were way into their summer patterns and tough to find and even tougher to get to bit. We ate fish everynight, but it was hard fishing.

I guess I kinda agree. Why would you post your 'russian roulette' story. That's like saying, 'I got through with my 9mm for bear protection - they never saw it'. Not a good idea to 'sneak' across the border. Next time, you might be holding your trip up, or leaving your buddy at the border. If one of my friends tried to cross like that, I'd have him stay home, or drive his own car.

As soon as I saw the title to this post I knew the high and mighty jerks would come out of the woodwork. Its the same as when someone complains that you can't have beer in the boat- everyone chastizes him and tells him to stay in the U.S. Well I for one am glad you posted this and I am also glad your friend got to go on the trip. Guys like "Ragtad" are just jerks with nothing better to do than spew out morals.

We are going to Canada later in June and will abide by all laws, except possibly having a couple of celebration beers in the boat. Hope the Canadian Gestapo does not see us. I'll make sure to post about it later so Ragtag can save another soul.

It's like any other story about crossing into the GWN. They could have just as easily been truned around. Wonder if the guys at Canadian Customs and Immigration ever read these posts?

Ok then, go get a DUI or commit a crime in Mexico - they won't send you back to the US, they'll put you in b!tch prison, where you'll become Pedro's 'boyfriend'.

Laws are laws, abide by them. That's not being a jerk, that's being a 'normal person'.

Do americans need a passport to cross the border this year? I have always just used a drivers license

Actually, you need one Watermelon flavored piece of Hubba-Bubba, two red rabbits feet and an 8 lb. bolwing ball. That is all you need.

You do not need a passport this year.

Dud- I have no idea what the mexico analogy means, but I never said anything about being a jerk if you do not break the law. The original post was about a guy who screwed up 5 years ago, paid for it, and went on a fishing trip. Giving the poster a hard time for being happy about getting across the border makes you a jerk in my book.

Say hi to Pedro for me.

It simply isn't fair to all the fishermen in the group to have their vacation trip risked by somebody traveling with a DUI who may not be able to cross at the border, and then that screws up the trip for everyone else if the guy gets caught. Unless, of course, everyone discusses it ahead of time, and is willing to risk their hard-earned and long-awaited trip on the chance gamble that the violator won't be discovered. Then, I guess you get what you deserve, or at least, you're making a voluntary decision to risk your trip. Or, perhaps the traveler with the conviction takes his own car, so he can just turn around on his own without inconveniencing others. Nothing high and mighty or holier than thou about not wanting to have your vacation blown.

Thanks for the kind comments to the few select guys on here who are jerks. Let me tell you why I posted this. People make mistakes. Plain and simple. We respect the laws of Canada and have no problems with their laws. We were at fault for not finding out about the DUI situation sooner. Once we did find out, the posts on this forum make you worried that you are running with a bunch of criminals if you try to cross the border with a DUI on your record. Not a single post I read had any glimmer of hope about our situation. So I thought I would give someone out there who could end up in the same situation, a little brighter picture. We were to far into this to back out. Had spent way to much money to back out, so we had to choice but to hope for the best. We talked to both the Canadian and American border people. They both had the same advice. Go and hope for the best, which is what we did. To Ragtag, the next time your line goes tight with that big fish, I hope it breaks.

cunn6776,

I really could not understand why they were jumping your case. I hear where you are coming from, but we just went on a trip where a guy did not listen to us about getting the rehab permit and he was sent home. Glad you had a good trip.

Okay, Okay

Some agree and others don't. It was not my intention to make that big of deal about it. I just thought you didn't need to post it. I sensed some gloating and if i am wrong about that ---sorry.
You have my apology

Hey Agent, thanks for the reply. I have nothing but respect for you guys. We have been checked a few times over the years and you have always been polite and curteous. The American customs agents could learn alot from you. Good luck and be safe - Stu
