View Full Version : Mille Lacs Pick your winner!
Make your pick for this weeks PWT Mille Lacs tourney! Give name, weight, and while we're at it, pick the PWT Angler of the year.
I'm going with Perry Good for the tournament win, 37 lbs. He just knows this lake too well.
I'll stick with Billy St Peter for AOY. I fished with Billy last weekend, first time in the boat with him. We figured a few things out after having a real slow day on Saturday. Good luck Billy, hang on to that lead!
Edited to correct slot info:
FYI, this is a 4 fish limit, no cull tourney, so the weights will be down a little. Protected slot is <14 and 22-28. You can have 2 over 28's, all four can be up to 22. Kind of odd rules as Mille Lacs is a little different than the rest of the state.

I would not bet against Doc Samson.
I think the winner will break 40 pounds but not many will.
check that

ONLY 2 fish per day or 1 per man over 28"! Thats been the rule for years now!

Mille Lacs rules are 4 fish per angler, no minimum to just under 22", with one of the four allowed over 28". No cull, No sort. For the tournament it sounds like they are allowed 4 fish per day (2 anglers) 14'- under 22", so TWO ONLY of those four could be over 28" per day.
I wish all the anglers a great tournament -- tried to get in as a co-angler but was too late. Mille Lacs is a FUN lake to fish and there are fish to be caught.

I'm sure this will get explain in detail at the rules meeting. My understanding is that the protected slot is 22" to 28" Also new this year in Minnesota is only 1 walleye over 20" daily per angler.I would assume this would apply to Mille Lacs as well but I could be wrong. So I don't think that all 4 fish could be over 28" So with that being as clear as a mudline on a windswept shore, I see it a 1- 28"+ fish and then 3- 19- 19 7/8 fish for a daily weight of appeox. 15 lbs. So 45lbs for the tournament. Oh and the winner Steve Fellegy, he grew up on the lake, ran a charter service there for several years and probably knows the lake better than any of the other Super Pros.
Regards,
Scott Lee

Like Vickie explained so well in the post above yours...One per day, per angler, would give you two overs per day... (remember there's two anglers in the boat).
I'm going to stick with the "Twins". No idea on what the weights will be though. I hate guessing that. ;)

ScottL,
The one over 20" rule in MN, DOES NOT apply to Mille Lacs. This is a Special Regulation Lake, which are usually tighter than state rules but when the slot opened to 22" on July 15 it actually made it looser.
I wish I had a guess on who will win but I don't. Anybody's game I guess.
Good luck to all.

Talked to a buddy fishing the tourney. A weight would be hard to guess. It's luck of the draw right now. Fishing is really slow, and if a guy catches 4 keepers a day he'll probably cash a check, just my guess. 14.5" fish WILL go in the bag. Good luck to all!

Someone mentioned "live bait", I dont think the tourney will be won riggin, however if I had to bet my last dollar on a "rigger" I'd take the guy that has been guiding, and rigging for he past 30 years, Mark Christianson, and in my humble opinion one of the top "pure fisherman" in the country.

I think it will be won with a bobber. It will take over 40 pounds and I would put my money on Bruce Sampson? Or Pete Harsh, or Gary Roach, or ahhh guess ill just have to find out.

I agree with you to a point. I think the bobber bite will be how most of the limits are taken; however, I think you have to weigh at least one and possibly two 28's to win this thing and I do not think they will be taken on a bobber. I say a combination strategy is going to win.

Sheldon Meidinger weighed in at 10:30 AM with 14.88lbs.
Ross Grothe weighed in second with 10.??15-20 minutes after Sheldon.
Andy and Mark Braumbaugh were 3 & 4 only a couple minutes later.
Bobbers went big this morning....in the right spots. Dark wet cloud cover cleared late AM and wind dropped off. 3 Mile reef was bare of pro's by 10:45. Lake is flat mirror right now with a very intense bright sun...temp around 80?
Oh yeah.....Sheldon or Bob Crow are who I'm backing!!

Gary Parsons is my pick, hard to beat someone with that knowledge and he's due. Dark horse is Scott Fairbairn.

I had the chance to run around the lake and watch the whole day unfold around the SE part of the lake. Sheldon is the only pro in the top ten thats corking. :rock-on:
As for 3 Mile, thats no secret to anyone as you said, but what was strange was seeing the reef clean of all but a muskie boat at 10:30 AM, with a SSE 15-18 coming into it with dark skies and intermittant rain. Perfect bobber conditions, and there it sat ....totally open!!!
(FYI, Sheldon got a lot of camara time today too! Charlie was shooting him when his 28+" hooked up, and climbed into the boat with him and filmed for almost an hour!!)

Mark Brumbagh has been close at a few Wacker tourneys, I like him to pull it off...probably will need that kicker though. Best weight without a big fish will be Gofron.

dont count Bobby Jr out/ hes fishing a totally different presentation then any one else. If the wind doesnt blow the next 2 days the bobber guys have problems.

Wind has been blowing all day so far. NE and swung east right after take off. Gray overcast skies. An hour before take off the fog on the lake had the visability down to a couple hundred yards. It mostly lifted by take off, but the sky is a very dark from the overcast.
Same forcast for tomarrow!

jack, good to see your Yar Craft "team" doing well. with the current conditions, it appears that Sheldon should have good luck again today.
things are very cool up here in northern mn today. the overcast skies and cooling temperatures should favor the cork bite... we will see soon. have a great day, jim c

Jack - do you remember catching my line in the wave wackers a few years ago. I was fishing a few miles out from Izaty's (2nd Reef) had a fish on and you still managed to get close enought to catch my line. Thank god it wasn't a weigh fish. Just remember Jack the lake is big enough for two boats.

Yeah, I would probably would have stopped tourney fishing to if I was smooth enough to catch a fellow competitors line on a lake that big. Shows good fishing ethics Jack.
I think you fished that year with your wife if I remember right. I think she was so embarrassed that the two of you left and fished somewhere else.
Hope you had fun at the weigh-in this week.

You obviously do not know what I mean. It was a toungue in cheek remark that he waited till Ron had a four pound lead with one day remaining to choose ROn as the winner. I would never insinuate that Ron is a cheater.
