How many have ever gave money to someone standing on the corner with a card board sign?
SIGN SAYS something like homeless or some type of message.
Here is what I did at 2 different times.
SIGN SAID WILL WORK FOR FOOD.
I gave the guy my card and said I have about a week worth of work maybe 2 painting our building and cleaning around it. Told them $10 per hour cash. Neither guy called so since that time I could care less what sign says.
My buddy carries MCDONALDS applications and hands that to them.

Ignore them! Hopefully they'll get the hint and either go away, or get a job!

Probably didn't have a phone to call you and starved to death. ;)
Anyway, there was an undercover TV reporter in Seattle that did a report on this a couple years ago. Turns out most of them make more than $10 an hour standing there so why work for it?

Fish_on is right. They do make money sitting there.
I have never given money and probably never will, but if the sign says anything with food I will offer.
One homeless man had a sign asking for food or change. Simple enough. Went to McDonalds, ordered an extra burger and never seen someone eat so fast. Another time went home, grabbed a can (pop top) of ravioli as I had to leave again and same thing.....gobbled up like nothing.
I saw a few dudes near Brainerd over the weekend. They scored a couple bucks from a car and looked like they were enjoying themselves....kinda like a contest. They were gross, but didn't look humble.

Hey Larry, Yes I have.
Walking down the Vegas Strip last January, 3 am, pocket full of cash and a beer in my hand. :) Come around the corner and a guy is sitting on the curb, cardboard sign.......
"I won't lie. I need money for beer"
Started to laugh and thought that was a pretty good line. Gave him $5 bucks.

The most I have ever given them is food. Would never give them money, they would most probably drink up. If any homeless people want to debate my opinion, lets hear your opinion.
24 hours in a day, 24 cans in a case, you do the math

I'll give them food but no money.
I came across a lady that was begging for food and diapers for her kids. I say come in the gas station and I'll help you out. She comes along. Once inside I tell her to grab some diapers and some food for her kids, I'll pick up the tab. She gives me a look, like what's this all about. I repeat myself. She gets mad and tells me to just give her the money. I tell her I have no cash but I'll put diapers and food on my credit card. She tells me to just get some cash out of the nearby ATM and give it to her. Well, I was done right there. Do NOT TELL me to GIVE you money. I gave her a piece of my mind and went on my way. Later that day, I'm driving by and she's still out there trying to hustle up some free money.
(PS. I never saw any kids, she was just trying to play on everyone's sympathies)

A few blocks from work I see pan handlers. They carry signs “will work for food”. One block away there is a Quick Trip that always has a sign looking for help. I don’t feel sorry for any of them. The best is there is now a couple that stands on the highway exit. He holds a sign begging for money and food while she sits on the ground talking on her cell phone. They don’t seem to get to many handouts.

Was walking through downtown one day and a bum (not Politically Correct I know) asked for money for food. We were standing outside of a Taco Bell and I said "Sure, come on inside and I'll buy you something here". He looked up at the sign and said "Man, I'd really rather have McDonalds". I told him if he's that particular he should probably beg outside of his preferred restaurant.
Needless to say, I just ignore them anymore.

I too have the same addiction, as if cranks weren't bad enough now I am into salmon, so now I buy spoons, flies and whatever else.
The reason I posted this was just seems to be more and more standing on street corners. I saw one the other day in the meridian, and across from him in the bushes was a new bike. He also had on new tennis shoes, better than the ones I wear. My MOM always said "there but for the grace of god go I." OR something like that, there is a point where possibly some do need food, I bet some make a darn good living doing this if we only knew.

I was in Chicago on business and out for a lunch break. Someone asked me for some money for food, since I was on an expense acct and not picky about what I ate, I said "Sure, there is a McDonalds right there, let me buy you lunch" He told me to "Go f*** yourself".
I have also had people in Vegas ask me for money for booze or drugs, I usually give them a few bucks if they are honest.

Here are some of my favorates from my past and some stories from my friends.
My buddy was done filling up his car with gas and was walking inside to pay. A homeless man says "Hotdogs a 2 for a $1". So my friend gives him a buck. Then the homeless man asks for $2, so he can give some to his buddy, which wasn't there. My buddy just said that is all he wanted to give, since he only had $10's and $20's. The homelss man had the nerve to sit there and argue about giving him more money.
My favorite, which brought me over the edge, was a man that stood at this corner for the last couple weeks, always asking for money for food for his dog and him. I finally took a grocery bag full of dog food, and a few canned goods that I founds around the house that morning. I seen the guy that morning, so I stopped and gave him what I took from the house. The man starred at me and started to loose it, so I got the heck out of there. In the rear view mirrow I seen the man through the dog food, and it scattered all over the grass.
I was so pissed off. I went out of my way that moring and spent an extra 15 mintues getting stuff together for him, and all he does is scare the crap out of me and waste my time and money....never again will I give a dime to them...
I beleive all of the homeless had some rough time in there lives, but that was in the past. Go out and get a job, there is always fast food jobs, and I know of plenty of contruction jobs that are always looking for help. Let me tell you, contruction guys make it just fine. My old man supported us for 10 years of contruction, until his body couldn't take it anymore, and we all lived just fine.
I would say 85% of it is a scam or plain being lazy

There is a guy I have seen on the same corner for about 2 years with a sign that says "Stranded Vietnam vet--nedd gas money/hungry". The first time I saw him I almost stopped, the heartstrings were not pulled so hard the 20-25th time. I think he probably made out pretty good, he must rotate corners.

One day I was driving and saw two obviously homeless dirty looking ladies with matted dredlock hair, long heavy skirts, a lot of funky plastic jewelry looking like they came straight from Haight-Ashbury in 1968. They were holding up a big sign that read "Hungry Hungry Hippies". I almost peed myself I laughed so hard. I don't usually give money to these folks, and didn't on this day either but only because the traffic lane I was in wouldn't allow it.

I give why not our country is the riches country in the world and we let people sleep on the street and beg for food.
Some of the people that you encounter on the street begging are former military personel, some are scam artist, some when they get they're life together could be drafted in a war between our government and who know's what country.
But what amazes me is you never hear anyone talk about the money our country sends {BILLIONS} to countrys all over the world.
A lot of the people in theese countries hate us.
And the money we give big corperations, i.e. Corperate Welfare to bail them out of what ever reason they claim they need the money for.
Neither of them the corperate welfarepeople or anyone related to them will ever fight in any Milatary conflict on the behalf of United States of America.
I just dont understand why some people who claim to be proud Americans, have a problem with helping fellow Americans begging on the street.
But they wont have a problem with helping a Billionaire or some Foreign country where most of the people in that country hate our guts.

I assume they're panhandling for drug or booze money, avert my eyes, roll up my car window, and keep going.
One reason I've been voting Democrat all these years is so that no one has to stand on a street corner begging for the basic necessities of life. My taxes pay for public housing, food stamps, and Medicaid. For the guys with signs saying "Vietnam Vet," I also (gladly) pay taxes for veterans benefits and veterans homes. If they're not eligible for those benefits, then the sign is lying, isn't it?
If someone is truly in need, I'll be happy to direct them to the appropriate government office (also supported by my taxes). However, I have absolutely no interest in facilitating someone's self-destructon by paying for their drug or alcohol addiction.
