Do not open any attachment with a double extension. Such as picture.doc.vir or anything like that.
This is something that happens partly because people mass mail to their address list and send everyones address to everyone else. Then it gets sent on and on and pretty soon it is in the hands of the usless people. Try to use the blind copy system when e-mailing to lots of your friends.

I got it from Juls too. Luckily my firewall caught it before it made it to my PC. She's got the W32.Badtrans virus, and it automatically sends itself to everyone in her Outlook Address Book. They already arrested the punks responsible for this one. Maybe that will be a deterrent to stuff like this in the future.
I just checked after reading this post and sure enough, there it was on my incoming mail. I deleted it. It must have gotten into the Walleye Central files of addresses as no one else on this board has my address.

Sorry about that everyone. What an agravation we didn't need eh? At about 6pm tonight I detected the virus. I went to my McAfee VirusScan to search it out. Apparently, two days ago when I was downloading the X-15 Demo Simulator from the Lowrance site, it requested that I turn the virus scan off when I do the "set-up" on the Lowrance program. I turned it off, and restarted the computer. I forgot to enable the VirusScan after the program was loaded, and now I have a Virus. GGrrrrrr!! It has somehow disabled the EmailScan, and I don't know how to activate the EmailScan again. The regular way doesn't work. It worked for all the others, but it's determined not to reactivate the EmailScan for some reason.
How do I get rid of this virus, and how can I get the VirusScan to work in the email again?
I know there's a few computer gurus in this group...can you help me?
Anyone have experience with this particular beast?
Thanks,
Juls

Hiya Juls,
Go to their web site (McAffee). There should be plenty of info there, or a way to ask them.
Good luck......R

Try right clicking on the shield icon in the lower right hand corner of the toolbar (if running windows) and selecting properties -> and then e-mail scan. There should be a box you can check to enable the e-mail scan. While you're at it you can check to see what else is enabled by clicking on the other tabs at the top of the window that opens up.
Hope this works- if not e-mail me or reply to this thread.

Also- I think the download scan has to be enabled first.

Hey Juls -
Your not alone - I got this one about 3 weeks ago - It took about 2 hours to get rid of it.
It's been a strange few weeks that way - must have had 6 more virus' try to get in in the last month.
Let me know if you can't get rid of it - I think I've still got the intstructions.

Hi James,
That was the first thing I did, and is what I meant when I said I tried to reactivate it the regular way..;-) It didn't work.
McKoz,
I could use those instructions please. I tried to print out the instructions from the McAfee site and it won't go to my printer for some reason. Grrrr. I think this is going to take me longer than two hours...Grrrr.
Glad to hear they got the punks who started this. What a pain in the keister. Those boys need to learn how to fish instead of sitting around thinking up ways to destroy peoples computers. Grrrr.

I got two emails from Juls - one last night at 6:10 pm and one this morning at 8:38 am. They were From: Julia Davis with a Subject: Re
When I tried to open them, there appeared to be nothing in the email, but my Outlook screen reopened, overlayed on the blank email screen. The emails did not have any attachments with them. Anybody else get the blank emails, and are they anything to be too concerned about?
Regards
Those are infected files. If you opened them I would guess that you now have that freaky little worm I had. See the post by Dodge1. He had a link to a program that will fix it pretty easily.
I had been getting those emails for the past month or so, and deleted them.... but it wasn't until I had the virus scan "off" that it got my puter. I was replying to an email from the Walleye List when everything went bonkers.
Again I apologize if this effects anyone from here. It wasn't intended.

Anyone that opened an email from Juls in the last couple of days, congratulations are now in order; "YOU HAVE THE BADTRANS VIRUS"
To remove this little critter please refer to my post, on this board, titled:
W32.Badtrans virus removal
This virus is spreading like wildfire but the good news is it's really easy to get rid of it. The bad news is that if you have it, it automatically has already sent everyone on you're email list an email, that contained the virus. That’s why it’s spreading like wildfire.

I downloaded the virus removal software you referred us to, ran it, and got a message "W32.Badtrans.B@mm has not been found on your computer". I did open the two emails from Juls, but they appeared to be empty. I didn't get any attachments, etc. Thanks for the link, Dodge1.

No harm, no foul here, Juls :)
How's your Wednesday going?!?
That's odd Dave. I received the e-mail from Juls (with the attachment). I've been receiving these from people for about two weeks now. I've been deleting them. The odd thing is that for me, they're tough to delete. When I click on the e-mail to delete it, the computer throws up a red message saying something like "the program has performed an illegal opperation and will be shut down". When I pull e-mail back up the e-mail will be open (not the attachment) and I'm able to delete the thing.
Best Regards,
FJH

Bugs are a bummer Eh and we all have had them or a close call with them, so don't sweat it Juls.
What gets me is somewere out there there is some freak who thinks this virus thing is his or her idea of real fun.
I just don't get it?
Anybody guess what I would do with theses freaks if I caught one?
Ya-yu-betch-ya!

Depending on who your e-mail service provider is, they might have applied server level detection and removal on all e-mails going through their system. That would account for you getting the e-mail without the attachment.

Year 2001 vandalism used to be you went outside and threw snowballs and what not. Got chased or chased. Built bonfires and walked the woods at night. Todays kids just don't go outside anymore, even to play. And as for the my girls, you have to kick them out of the house.
Take a kid fishing, for a walk in the woods, do some creek sneaking. Seem as though a tomato on a windsheild is a lot less expensive and frustrating then technical support, and downloads.
Frat brats bored to death.
How does this worm react? What does your computer do if you have it? I opened it but there was nothing there so I,then, deleted it. My computer seems to be ok. Nothing unusual. Thanks for any info.! Bo #582

It sounds like your ISP intercepted the virus for you.
I was responding to an email from the Walleye List when all heck broke loose. I pressed send and it dissappeard. I wrote out my response again and pressed send. It went through, but then all of the sudden I got 9 or 10 really quick notifications that an email that I sent did not go through. The names on the emails were unfamiliar to me and I knew something was wrong. Then I got automatic responses telling me that I tried to send an infected file to some people, and that I should check my system for viruses. These auto reponses were from other people's ISPs. It slowed my puter down considerably, but it didn't eat any saved information, so that was a good thing.
It was messy, but it didn't really do any harm to my puter. Once I cleaned the files out of my system, and got my Virus Scan working again, everything was ok.

I got the e-mails from Juls too. When I opened them I got a message that my puter couldn't connect. I then deleted it. I have MSN so maybe it was detected there. No harm done. Have a nice day.
