That depends on how those hours were racked up. You can have any Merc tech do a readout on an opti and you can see how many hours at what RPM's the motor was driven.
I have 400 on my motor, but over 200 of those are from trolling and only about 2-3% are at WOT.
Most motors are made to run 1000-2000 hours before needing a rebuild (from what I've heard).

Those early optimaxs have really had some problems so if you have some hours on it and its still running good consider yoursef lucky and get rid of it while its still worth something.
Im not really familiar with the Mercs but if its anything like the bombardier stuff the profile should look like a smiley face, with the majority of the rpms at idle and 6000+, they dont really like the midrange. The engines love the WOT and absolutely hate cruising speeds.
The new four strokes are lasting longer then ever now. Especially the Hondas. The USCG can testify to that, taking off all of their merc optis which they werent getting 800 hours out of but they abuse the #### out of their stuff. Also taking off all of the yamaha, suzukis and anything else off and going pretty much exclusively Honda in the great lakes. I work on a lot of these engines and the uscg has been getting over 2500 hours on each motor in 2 year and Honda is still giving a 3 year unlimited hour warreny. The best part about that is not the warrenty but in over 3500 honda 225s in the great lakes they are reporting less then a 1% down time, next closest was yamaha with just under 8%.

HONDAM,
You are saying that the USCG has 3500 Honda 225's on the Great Lakes? That seems like a big number to me. I don't live on the Great Lakes so I have no basis other than 3500 sounds like a lot of motors.
IMHO, if I was looking to purchase a used motor and it had 800 hours, I would move one. Well, it would have to be priced well and have to be inspected thoroughly.

Four Stroke Honda's are like a diesel engine. With regular maintenance the number of hours have little meaning. My Honda runs 8-10 hours nearly everyday of the softwater season here in Ohio 90% pull/10% wot. If your not one of the flash n' dash boyz look into a 4-stroke for a long-life trouble-free engine...

When the USCG buys a boat or engines for a boat they always purchase 3 engines, twins with a spare. Considering how big the great lakes are and how many coast gaurd stations there are and how many boats they have at each its not to hard to believe.

I say this as a loving Honda guy (My Car, SUV, Mower). Why, if Honda outboards are so much better than the others, are they so much less popular than the others? I had a real difficult time buying my boat without a Honda but EVERYONE I talked to said as great as Honda is, they have not kept up in the Marine industry. Main thing I heard is lack of technology and power. I wound up with Yamaha 150 and am wondering if I made the right move since I put A LOT of hours on my motor and am a "keep it for the long run" guy?

That is a boldfaced BS answer to someone asking an honest question. I don't know anyone on Erie that runs their Rude as you say they do anfd they run great and midrange RPM's. If you want to sell Hondas on here you ought to buy an AD from Scott or sponsor the site!

My Evinrude 250 DI, has tons of midrange torque, I can climb mountains of Erie water with ease. motor performs awesome, either cruising or WOT, yeah maybe is doesn't like cruising speed only because it wants to take off and go faster, not your 4 stroke, nothing wrong with Honda's good product just don't spit Honda game all over WC

The CG operates (according to them) fewer than 200 small boats on the Great Lakes, so they must purchase 17.5 Hondas per boat in order to use 3,500 Hondas :-) Our government is wasteful but that is a bit much to swallow Honda. Your BS factor is now through the ceiling Honda.

First of all i didnt say anything about them not doing it, just mechanically what they perfer. I have a lot of experience with these motors, my dad has been an OMC master technician for almost 30 years and he was getting a lot of calls from the engineers when devoloping those motors.
I am not out to sell hondas, im just a fanatic. I do not get anything for posting on here and i do not list the name, phone number, website, or anything else on here for my dealership.

The main reason Honda isn’t as popular is they don’t have the amount of dealers, that Merc. & Evinrude have. Some people would rather get a slightly lower quality motor, just because there are more dealers.
What happens if there is only 1 Honda dealer in your town, and you have a disagreement with them? You might have to travel very far to find another dealer.
What happens if you trailer you boat for an out of town vacation, and you need some Honda parts, and the local dealer is far away?
Suzuki was always an excellent motor, but they took forever to break into the Miami area, because at the beginning they had so few dealers. This is an exaggeration but there seemed to be 50 Merc dealers for every 1 Suzuki dealer.
As Honda adds more dealerships there market share will grow.
Today all the motors are much more reliable than they were 10 years ago. Therefore some people choose the dealer they like, and end up with what ever brand that dealer sells.

According to who? Did you know that since 9/11 the USCG has to go past every power plant, city water intake, and treatment plant every day twice a day? Fewer then 200 small boats? Larry Stewart in Cleveland is the commanding officer for the USCG in the great lakes, i suggest you get numbers from him before you tell me that im wrong.

the uscg calumet harbor alone has 8 25' safe boats and thats just one station thats 16 motors at one station . from what i was told there are three other stations in Chicago alone similarly equipped.
granted big citys will have more boats but all the stations since 9/11 have at least two least two small boats that ads up to a lot more than 200 boats
I got this information from the guy at the front desk at the michigan city uscg station last friday when i stopped by to get a list of phone numbers to find a safe boating class they had two 25' boats. Less than one year old safe boat they had there had 1007 hours on it I was asking questions because i am considering getting a new boat over the winter . and Honda power will get serious consideration .

According to the NINTH DISTRICT WEBSITE. Where do you get this BS,they pass Davis Besse power plant on Lake Erie (by boat) a couple dozen times A YEAR at most! Twice a day my a$$.
“The Ninth District employs over 6,500 active duty, reserve, auxiliary and civilian members. The district includes four Sector Offices, four Marine Safety Units, two Air Stations, two Air Facilities, eleven Cutters and 46 small boat Stations. These units are responsible for over 1,500 miles of international border and 6,700 miles of U.S. shoreline spanning eight states and all five Great Lakes."
46 small boat stations in ALL FIVE GREAT LAKES!!! So what do they do, keep 1200 small boats in 46 boat stations LOL Give me a break!
I think Hondas are probably great engines and doubt they need this BS to sell them!

I don't blame him. I'm getting kind of tired of having a Honda commercial shoved at me every time I get on here. It really isn't necessary fanatic or not. If I want a Honda, I know where to find one. Not blasting anyone, just tired of having them pushed at me. I have three Mercs and I'm not on here bragging about how good Mercs are and cutting all other outboards. Sorry for the rant.

I disagree. Hondas have a great reputation not only in the marine arena, but also in the automobile and ATV spectrum. I have dealt with alot of (older) Mercurys and absolutely HATE them. I understand that they are alot better now than they were years ago, but I can't get over the fact that Between my father and I we went through six of them before we switched to Honda. I have not had a problem since and that was six years ago. They have a reputation for a reason and Hondam is just trying to help you guys out in my opinion.

That is a fact that the Coast Guard has to run past them places 2 a day every day, it has to be at different times every day too. I am not meaning to force anything on anyone but theirs a lot of people talking about yamahas and merc and etecs on here, im just trying to represent, if i have overdone it point taken. I am in not way trying to sell anything, just provide information.
