I saw on another ice fishing forum that in minnesota
you must display your name, address, and drivers license
number with 3inch letters on all portables. Is this
something new? It seems last year all I displayed was
the fish house license. If this is true, is it highly
enforced?

The Minnesota regs indicate name and address OR drivers license number displayed in 3 inch letters on the outside of the house. The actual fish house license must be displayed on the exterior door not more than 6 inches below the top. On a fold down shelter like fish traps the license must be to the right of the opening when facing the structure no more than 6 inches from the top.
The best part is getting the fish license to stay attached to the canvas. I must stop typing now becuause I'm laughing too hard!!!

I also heard that a car can be considered a fish house and a license legaly required if you are sitting in it watching tip-ups.
Laughing resumes.....

3" letters are impossible the Drivers license # is 4' long or with a name like Pitsenburger it is also 4' long. I have done it in 1 1/2" letters and it is manegable and never a complaint from the Warden.
I also fold my sticker license over a metal card that is about the size of a credit card and then drill a hole in a corner and use a wire tie to fasten to the zipper on the door. Never a problem with either way of doing this as long as they are current and legible.
I think the 3" letters are so that they can be read it from the air when the ice may be unsafe to travel on.

It is possible to make the 3" letters fit. You just need to cut the letters out with a font that is narrow enough or else have the company that cuts them out plot them to the size you need.

Hi Pitts: I thought I read something in Outdoor News about the DNR reduced the size down to 2". The article also mentioned about the reflector on all four sides, 2" square I believe. I don't think a car or truck is not considered a fish house and required to be so licensed. One type licence per vehicle is sufficient. I know my fish house is not required to have a trailer license even though it look like a travel trailer. I keep a copy of the law in my truck, also construction equiptment is exempt under the same statute. In the summer I pull it around and the State Patrol or local police have checked it out. I do have to have a currant fish house licence displayed though, to be legal on the roads and freeways. Keep praying for ICE.....Kaz

The new self adhering license if displayed as listed inside the fish house is sufficient for portable units. A portable unit is one that is not left on the ice over night, in my understanding of the regulation.

A lot of angers use a plastic ID envelope and secure it to a inside support pole or insert it in a viewing pane if the unit has one. Some people have the new license laminated and attached them to the portables to be in compliance.

My question is if you are a nonresident and your home state does not require a license on a portable do you need to purchase one in MN?

I am glad ND has eliminated the requirement to licensing of ice houses, much less hassle.
