" Lapp's Win The WMT Championship"
The Pike/Round Lake Chain, just outside of Park Falls, hosted the WMT's 2001 invitational championship tournament on September 22 and 23. The ever changing weather tested the competitor's skills and endurance.
Thirteen fish were registered for the tourney with Phil Scweik and Pete Hilman tallying the first fish on Saturday with a 36 1/4" muskie at 7:34am. Shortly afterwards, the largest fish of the tournament at 45 1/2" was caught by Jim Wilfer and Charlie Thomas at 7:54am. Seven more muskies would be measured before the end of the day.
Sunday morning muskie activity started early with Eric Zoromski and Chris Clifford landing a 34" fish at 6:50am. At 8:04am, Rick and Dick Lapp would catch their second muskie of the contest with a 41 1/4 incher, their first being a 38 3/4" fish, the previous day. The second second team to double up for the tournament would be Steve and Mike Schneider, when they registered a 38 incher at 8:47am coupled with their 34" muskie on Saturday.
First place would go to Rick Lapp of Iron River, MI and Dick Lapp of Land O' Lakes with a 38 3/4" and a 41 1/4" muskie. Capturing second place was Steve and Mike Schneider, both of Phillips, with fish measuring 34 and 38 inches. Jim Wilfer of Port Washington and Charlie Thomas of Brookfield took 3rd place with a 45 1/2" muskie.
A solid 40 1/2" muskie would land Brian Kastner of Hazelhurst and Brian Emmerich of Woodruff, 4th place. Gary and Linda Jacobs of Lomira would earn 5th place with a 39 inch beauty. Jason Weik of Fifield and Ryan Miller of Butternut would earn a 6th place with a 36 1/2 incher.
Seventh place would go to the team of Phil Schweik and Pete Hilman, Both of Mosinee, with their fish of 36 1/4 inches. Dan Buss of West Bend and Bob Chitty of Luck received 8th place with their fish of 36 1/4 inches. (In the event of a tie, the first team to measure the muskie receives a higher placement.)
A 35 3/4" muskie would be enough to land Jim Burke of Cary, IL and Tom Burke of Racine, 9th place. Steve Ingram of St. Germain and Jim Kortens of Wausau would capture 10th place with a 34 incher.
Scoring on a 38 3/4" and a 41 1/4" muskie at the championship helped the team of Rick and Dick Lapp take the Team of the Year honors, with a total of 207.25 points. For the season, the Lapps earned more than $11,000.00 fishing the WMT tournaments.
This year's $15,000.00 Lowe boat contest, to be awarded to the team registering the largest muskie, 50" or greater, (courtesy of Heckel's Eagle River Marina, Lowe Boats and the WMT) was not won by any of the tournament fisherman throughout the tournament series.
The 2002 WMT schedule will be announced in the near future. For a brochure, please call the WMT at (715)369-1394 or e-mail us at HUNTERMD@NEWNORTH.NET.
Thanks and have a great hunting season,
