View Full Version : Husky jerks
At this time of year I fish mainly out of huron on l.erie for walleye .
I have been having almost all my success on big h.jerks and mainly in the "clown" color pattern.I run them thirty to sixty feet behind my inline boards..
I run a moderate size snap swivel with a .3/8 oz bullet weight as a stop for my inline boards then about six feet of trilene green twelve pd. test as a leader. My rigs are spooled with seventeen pd. green or clear trilene.
I`m normally pulling two or three reef runners(at distances off the boards I`m hearing other guys haveing success at) and tryng to match the hot colors but as of yet haven`t had a taker on any of them.
I`m looseing my faith in them and wondering if I should just run the big rapala h.jerks and scrap them? I`m catching fish but I can`t seem to make the reef runners I hear so much about produce.
Have any of you anglers had this type of experience with these two baits?Does one oufish the other on your boat most nights?
Could it be something to do with my rigging or just a unlucky streak on this bait?.I normally troll 1 to 1.6 mph on my GPS...Thanks for any tips here...Len

Len- I would check to make sure the reefrunners are tuned perfectly. They can be tricky, but should be tuned so they spend an even amount of time going left of center and right of center and don't flip on their side. Also, the two lures have different dive curves, so you would want less line out on the reefrunners that the husky jerks to get them at the same depth.
If you totally lose confidence, I'm sure you'll be able to sell off the reefrunners.

Len,
James nailed it. The Deep Diver Reef Runners have to properly tuned. It took me 3 or 4 outings to understand exactly what needed to be done, nut fun. At least until you bring in a 2 man limit averaging 6lbs.
I have used the original floating husky jerks side by side with the Ripsticks and Deep Diver Reef Runners and have done well on all.
If you are fishing up higher, you might be better off using the Ripsticks which allows you to get your lines farther back from the boat. Their dive curves are very similar with the Husky Jerk going slightly deeper. Also, the Ripsticks still need tuning but not like the Deep Divers.
When I have run the Deep Diver's up high, I only run them 20 - 30' behind the board. For the Ripsticks, I run them the same distance back as my husky jerks. Another possibility if you have them are the Deep Little Rippers. Just another bait, slightly different action to throw at them which some nights works great. If you monitor channel 79, the guys give pretty good information on lure/color/feet back. If you are catching them on the Husky Jerks you definitely should be able to on the Reef Runner's. Good luck.
Isn't Husky Jerks just another name for Bears fans???

I outfish the Husky Jerks 6-1 using SUPER ROUGES. We fish them 35-100 foft back at nite. They have twice the action of the Rapala's at slow speed. Just ask Den what they can do. Rick

In your post you said that you use snap swivels. Try just a snap. Reef Runners are really touchy to tune and the swivel just might be throwing them off. Just a thought.

I use the large snap swivel where my leader and board stop are..
At the lure I use only a good rapala (open) knot..As for tuneing the r.runners that could be the problem?Should they run any certain way at the speeds I am trolling to be most productive?..Thanks for your help thus far..Len
I dont beleive any bait will outfish a rapala h.jerk 6 to 1..lol. I will however give some of my super r.rogues a try next time out..I have several I use for spring browns and coho out on lake mich..Is there any really hot colors in the super rogues?..I haven`t heard them mentioned much out of huron..Len
Len, the 3 lures mentioned all catch fish, to be used right all 3 have a different time to be used, as bigfoot stated, i was there with him, and the rogue did out fish the husky jerk that night, by a large margin too. i have seen times if you didnt have one of a givin lure you flat didnt get fish. as i said, they all have the time, and speed, to make them work at their peak. good luck and good fishin.

I would throw away all your Husky Jerks. How dare they catch fish!
