Hey,
Is it a distractant to musky if they see weeds on your lure? My friend and I constantly troll and always pick up weeds. Does anyone have tips on how not to pickup so many weeds when trolling?

I have been using three foot long leaders and I attach a blunted treble hook at the top of the leader it will catch most of the weeds . It also helps if you put your rod tips in the water to catch the floaters . I still chech the lines often to clear the weeds off the weed catcher !

Can't say I have ever caught a musky with weeds on the lure. The Ferd has some great tips. Weeds on the lure will obviously hinder the action.

I did once a couple years ago have about three feet of weeds on the back of a spinnerbait I was casting and had a musky follow me up to the boat. Same day had it happen on an invader.

esox- the lake i fish has alot of floating weeds, i also like to troll alot and most of my fishing is at night. as the FERD said 3 ft. leaders help alot, but i also have my rod holders set up so i can run my rods straight down, not out to the side. with a 6 to 7 ft. rod i have 3+ ft. of the rod straight down under water , and all of the weeds catch on the rod at surface level. this has been very effective for me. i can catch a ton of weeds on my rod but not 1 weed will make it down my line to the lure. this is very helpful when trolling after dark too.---weedless tony faurot

Esox,

I use 6ft leaders with a weight attached in front. I also run the rod tips in the water. With a weight you can troll shorter lines and at a faster speed without your bait rolling. The tip with the hook sounds like it would catch the weeds a little better. I'll have to give that a try.
