: A Tale of Two Reels

I just wanted to relate a recent experience with Cabela's...
In August I purchased their Muskie Combo. The reel, a MegaRoyal Plus 200, arrived defective. The reel wouldn't engage consistently when the handle was turned. I promptly returned it for a replacement. The replacement was received in timely fashion, but two trips later I encountered the same behavior, and now could hear a distinct GRINDING when I turned the handle.
I wish I had done my research first. I found several threads here and on another site discussing similar experinces with this reel. So I called Cabela's to complain, and explained that I wanted a new reel but would not accept another MR Plus as a replacement. I went through several Customer Service reps before landing on one who could make a decision
To make a long story shorter, we arrived at a mutually agreeable solution: they sent me a new Abu Garcia 6600CB as a replacement, and I promised to inform the masses that they treated me well. I will continue to shop through Cabela's because I do believe that they understand the value of a longterm customer relationship. I hope for their sake that they improve or abandon that model of reel.

I ordered a MegRoyal Plus last spring and never even spooled it with line. I could see it was defective and sent it back and traded it in on a 6500 Ultra-Cast.

Cabelas sure does try hard. I've always been very happy with their customer service and its coming to the point that I buy a lot of stuff from them because of their great service. Just wish they carried more Muskie lures.:)

Good fishing.

Too bad cabelas had to give me a bunch of BS. They finally told me i could trade mine in for a 6500C3. So i sent it in. A week later i called to see what had gone on (i express shipped it) and they were a few minutes away from sending me another megaroyal reel. I finally talked them into sending me a 6500C4 but I had to pay another $25, even though they sell the megaroyal seperately for more than a C4. They have definetly lost a customer.

I know what your saying about those Cabella reels. I had two that went bad the first time I used them and my son also had the same experience. I think he had three of them before he gave up and got something different. We both now have the Abu Garcia. Can't believe that they would put such a reel on the market. I've had good experience's with Cabella's and some real bad ones also. I live in Owatonna so I can deal with them personally. I've seen some real nasty women behind that customer service counter. I for one don't think I'll be going back out there. I don't think the deals are that great anyway. Just my opinion. epa

I dont have any experience with the megaroyals but when I was at cabelas in person there was a room where they sell returned, open box, closeout, etc merchandise and it was full of those reels. That told me to stay away from them.

A number of years ago I bought a huge spool of the then greatest super line from Cabelas. It was a Kevlar line that Bob M was promoting. Well, after discovering that the line only lasted for a few hours of casting before falling apart, I took it off all my reels and sent it back to Cabelas. Cabelas refunded my money and I doubt any other place would have.

To bad to hear others have had trouble. Maybe I've just been lucky.

Good fishing all.
