View Full Version : Tuffy Esox magnum ?
I'm thinking of buying one but i'm worried that it wont be able to handle the big waters in Canada. Does anyone have any experience on Canadian waters with an Esox Magnum?

I don't have personal experience with them but I recently read a musky article where the guy was fishing lake of the woods in one and got stuck in a storm and he was ok.

I have had an Tuffy Esox Magnum since 1992 with a 115 HP Yamaha. I have had it in 4' waves and did fine. I wouldn't want a steady diet of those, but I did fine. Anything bigger than 2' you have to pay close attention. The height of the waves are not as important as the distance between the crests. You have to watch how you take the waves from a speed standpoint (slow sometimes is not the answer) as well as the angle that you take the crests. It all comes from experience.
There are more expensive boats out there but nothing that I would rather fish out of!

I've not owned one, but have ridden in one with "moderate" wind and they ride like a dream.

I had a Tuffy Esox magnum for three years and took it to Canada four times. Twice on LOTW. I felt safe and was able to fish any stucture even with wind blowing in. Lots of room and very very stable.
I even took mine out on Lake Michigan twice to catch salmon to show you how much confidence I had in it.
Its just like any other boat, if the wind blows very hard, you use your head and run behind islands or stay in the cabin.. Ask yourself, can you fish in 30+ mph winds effectively anyway in any rig.. You just cant.

I was that guy - caught in a fast moving storm on LOTW. I love the Tuffy Esox Magnum and have owned and fished from them for 12 years. Great boat, great layout and a true muskie boat. But, it's not a rough water boat. Can you take to LOTW - absolutely, but you must be cognizant of the weather and the wind and especially so if in open basins or wide open lakes (Leech. Mille Lacs, etc...). So, don't let bigger water hamper your decision. But, also be ready to stay back if the wind starts whippin. After my experience and becuase I'm fishing bigger waters I moved to a Tuffy Osprey 1990. And yes, you can fish - easily - in 30 MPH winds with the Osprey. You'll love your Tuffy - whether you go with the Esox series or a deep V Esox or Osprey.

Hey Chad:
If you are thinking of getting the Esox Magnum but are worried about the Big lakes, Get an Esox Deep V. It has the same layout as the Esox Magnum. I got one this Spring and love it. The sizes vary as well from 16'10" to 20'. Check them out. If you are in the Chicago area and want to see mine to see what it looks like just let me know. I have a tiller 16'10" version and have fished three adults in it with no problems. I was pleasantly suprised at that. Good Luck
