Any of you northern members fishing on the Winnipeg River lateley? I'm heading up next week to try finding a trophy buck, and test the waters for Muskie; in that order. Just wondering how the action has been this week.

I was up on the Winnipeg in late August. Very clear water up there. Unfortunately the weather was hot and clear skies everyday so I was limited on the time that fish were active. We were able to catch a 50, 42, and a couple other short fish with a giant pike. If you have overcast days, HANG ON! We saw many large fish, no monsters but some nice upper 40's. Lots of structure to fish so you won't have any trouble finding something productive. Had most of our action on small points. Think deep water and good luck.

Happy hooksets and hope you get a hog

Just got back from Minaki, Ontario an hour ago. The trophy bucks were safe this year, I only took a small buck. I was going through some serious fishing withdrawl, doing the hunting thing, and decided to take a smaller buck and fish the last two days. I ended up boating 11 Muskie, and 36 Northern, in two days fishing. The Muskies ranged in size fron 28" - 37", nothing big but fun to catch. The weather was cold and couldn't make up it's mind if it should rain or snow the first day. The second day was overcast and foggy. Both days provided exceptional fishing pleasure, if you could stand being out there!

Thanks for your response to the question I had, and hope you have good luck the next time you visit Minaki!

Hi

heading up to Minaki for a couple days fishing, was curious as to what to be looking for, should I be trolling or casting.Never fished this area and what to have a successful weekend, being it will be the last for the season.

Thanks

The area I was fishing was the Cobalt Narrows, about 5 miles south of Minaki. I casted and trolled. I was using the biggest artificial baits I own, Cisco Kids, Jakes, Hi-Fin Giant Scamper, and whatever elce that was 10" or longer; and the fish just ate them up.

The second day of fishing was the last day I fished, but I found if you casted, and then jurked or stripped the baits, the fish responded much better than a steady retreve. The fish are gorging themselves on some kind of fortage fish in the area around the bouy, as this is where I had the best action. I tried trolling in deep water on Pistol Lake as you suggested I try, but had no action in deep water. All the fish were solid, heavy through the body, and fine specimens of what Canada has to offer fishermen from the lower 48.

Be prepaired to deal with the elements when you venture out on the water. The wind was raw, the rain and snow was flying, but the fish were on the bite! Good luck, and let me know how you did.
