I received the 6" reef hawg I traded but it hangs tail down in the surface. Should I try to make it swim horizontally by leading it near the head or should it work ok?

Nope, the tail down attitude in reef hawgs is usually a good thing. I'd thank whomever you made a trade with, cause you got a good one. Your bait should dart and turn very nicely and rise nose-up... giving it lots of horizontal AND vertical movement.
Save the weighting for when you get a "dead stick" or "cork". Enjoy your new bait.

thanks Jlong! I never heard about that variation of reef hawgs. By the way, the one with whom I traded was Kly! Very friendly guy!

no way!! :D
Jlong, I just turned the screw-eye vertically and added a bucher splitring and it glides the way yall describe the HR!

The tail down is definately best. If you use a split ring, use a leader without a snap(attatch split ring right to leader), and the action will improve even further!!!

Thanks for the tip Jason, I will definately try that next weekend! Did you receive my e-mail about the cobb's shallow runner?

hey happy hooker! Any news on the grannies?
I haven't tried it on the reef hawgs (seeing as I only have one) but I did do it on crankbaits to get a very irregular wobble and it does outproduce normal ones on occasion. It would be worth a try to add lead towards the tail but use sticky tape to move the lead around at the tail to find the perfect action. Wait to drill a hole until you are satisfied with action.
I did build some zig zag baits of 15cm with this head up action and they fish slow but they glide better than with head down.

jason, does it make a big difference if I use my normal 1mm diameter jerkbaitleaders or a 1.2mm leader? Should I attach a swivel on the other end? I normally make my own with just a heavy duty coast-lock snap on the front. I have heard that the 6" cobb's gliders have a nicer wobble but less depth with a 1.2mm thick leader and less wobble but more depth on a 1mm thick leader?
