Howdy: I was wondering what the reasons where that all of us fish for muskies? Is it because they can be hard to catch? Or is it that they grow so large? How about the way they follow and hit at the boat, or follow and not hit? Is it the way they look, with that underslung jaw full of sharp teeth and malevolent eyes? Is it their power and speed? Or maybe the gear that's used that gets your juices flowing?

We all come from different areas of the country with different backgrounds and experiences. So our reasons maybe vastly different. In short what is it about this species that gets you to fish for them and not fish for the "lesser" fish. For me it's all of the above and just a plain love for the fish.

I fish for Muskies because of the violence. I also fish for cats, carp and just about everything else that swims, it is darn hard to beat the violence of a muskie strike.

THE EXCITEMENT. YOU JUST NEVER KNOW HOW BIG THAT FISH IS ON THE END OF YOUR LINE TILL YOU GET IT TO THE BOAT.
THE POWERFULL STRIKES. YOU KNOW ITS BIG WHEN YOU ARE REELING ONE WAY AND YOUR LINE STARTS GOING THE OTHER WAY, BUT HOW BIG IS IT?

There's nothing like a big toothy critter staring at YOU beside the boat! not to mention the AWESOME jumps and heart pounding strikes, and watching that huge submarine pushing water toward your baits, or maybe its the fact that they BITE BACK!

I'm NEW, NEW, NEW to the Muskie fishing, Ive been a dedicated smallie/striped bass guy for years, and after going to braids in the past 2 years, I started landing a few skis on bass tackle and thatS ALL it took :)

LOL DR! Wait 'til we hit the Cave.....got tired of fishing for "normal fish" but will still sling for stripers/wallies some....now that I've found out that DRs' inlaws live near me we hopefully will team up on the pop. here + teach catch/release! Same reason I went in the Army twice + did what I did....not many do it + the rewards are heads above the rest when mission is finished.....

Because it is so much FUN! Like the follows, like the hits, like being in nature!

I fish for Muskies because I caught the fever at a young age. When I was 18 I fished in the Hayward, Wi area and on my first outing I had a 38" Musky follow to the boat! My knees shook, I had to sit down in the boat, and I was hooked for life. I'm now 48. We all really know it's not fun, not catching a fish for days at a time, sore arms and backs, blistering hot weather, cold freezing wind! It's the mystic, the unknown of whats out there. It's the hunt for a big musky that really turns you on and the final reward for catching a trophy.

Good QUESTION! I fish for 'skies because of the forcefulness of the fish. The intensity of the fish. I myself never really did have the patience to like fishing but musky fishing to me is a tottaly different sport. Its worth the patience when that fish hammers that bait and you reel in a 40" hawg.

Just as I thought, the reasons are as varied as the people pursueing them. Yet somehow I can relate to every reason that's been listed. Perhaps the pursuit of this fish has a soulfulness, or maybe a spirituality, that draws us to this sport and to each other in a way that we can all understand.

For me its the challenge of catching a Muskie. No other fish gives me that challenge. And its different than other fishing in that its more like hunting. Herb

THe reason that I fish for muskies is because I have obsessive Compulsive Disorder. That way I spend all of my time going back and forth from Muskiefirst to Muskiecentral instead of turning the lights on and off all day.

I fish for muskies for all the above reasons, but the joke in the boat on those not so perfect days is: “If you’re going to go fishing and get skunked, might as well pretend to be fishing for something big.”

Competing at the highest level,,can best explain most of the attraction for me,,,also after flyfishing for trout for years where I would sometimes use 1 lb test,,its fun to use big stuff,,,big lines, big lures, big rods, reels

Why do I fish muskies? It is a different and better thrill than lets say jigging for walleyes. You never know what you are goiong to have on the end of your line. If you are reading this and not certain about fishinf muskies next year tie on a Bucher Topraider. You get a strike on that and you are hooked for good.
