View Full Version : Painting Lures? Airbrushing?
I'm beginning to build my own lures this winter and would like some tips about painting lures? Whats your best method? Does anyone use an airbrush? For the airbrush, what is the best model for lures? Paint? Any beginner tips?
Thanks,
MJB

I have been using vinyl lure and jig paint. First you have to give it a coat of white and let it dry for a few days. If the lure is small enough yo can dip it or else I have poured it over the body. Vinyl paint is extremely think and takes a while to dry. For the coloring I use an Aztek double action trigger airbrush. The paint has to be thinned down or you get what looks like spider webs and the flow is poor. I estimate that I add 1 to 1 1/2 times as much thinner as paint. I finish by using a cheap foam brush and applying a coat of top coat. Didn't take too long to get the hang of airbrushing. Each lure I paint I get better at the detail. If you are going to buy an airbrush, don't waste your money buying the propellant. I went to Menards and bought a small 2 gallon compressor for under $100.

MJB - Check out Aztek airbrushes. Great brush. EASY maintainance. Great quality. Just by changing the tips you can switch from a fine spray to a high spray to a splatter spray, and lots in between. You can use any paints that you want to. Then put a clear coat over that. Automotive clears work. Envirotex is another great top coat. Save items that you find that can make cool patterns. Like the stuff inside a wedding dress that makes it 'poof'. Great scale patterns from that. Pick up a copy or two of Air Brush Action magazine. Lots of tips and articles about guys doing their thing. Probably not many bait painters but you can still pick up some good tips from the guys doing snowboards, skateboards, surfboards, car hoods, T-shirts, fine art.... Good luck and feel free to email me if you have any questions.
Better to have and not need than to need and not have!
