Time on the water is the very best teacher.
Seminars are fun and you can learn a lot.
Listen to what is being said and try to input some of these things on the waters you fish.
Videos, TV shows, books and mags are very good to.
Web site BB's are places to find some info, good at times, but you never know who your talking to!
;)
Just getting out and doing it is what worked best for me, oh so long ago!
Good luck.

I'd say it sure doesn't hurt to be a member. The people you meet at the monthly meetings will help out, maybe make a new friend or two. You can be a part of the big picture, someone who gives ,not just takes. The sport of muskie fishing depends on clubs like M.I. ,just think if the future of muskie stocking was left up to trout unlimited or B.A.S.S.

Its cheap. Worth the price of the magazine alone. Go to a few meetings and see what you think. If there are multiple chapters near you, try them all. They are offering a free issue of the magazine to non-members right now on their web site. www.muskiesinc.org
You don't have to join to go to a chapter meeting. You can find your local chapter and contact information on the MI website.
ps. Not all chapters are the same. I went to a meeting once and nobody said boo to me. It was a long time before I went back and I'm glad I did. Not all fisherman are the most outgoing people in the world. You might want to introduce yourself to the chapter president as a prospective member and chew on their ear for a fee minutes.

Studies have shown that muskie stocking is not the was to go when considering muskie management anyway. Public education re the catch and release philosophy is what is needed.
Its well worth it. Join. You meet really interesting people and can always learn something. Our chapter and most of them, have guest speakers that are always interesting and entertaining. We also have on the lake types of meetings and alot more. I think/know being a member has put more fish in the boat. But like everything else- you get what you put into it.

$35.00 for two years and a hat, plus a monthly magizine, not to mention the benefits from the local club. Well worth the investment. The information that is shared is helpful, outings are great, and the people are all fellow muskienuts. You can't go wrong being a member regardless of anyone else's beliefs. Muskies Inc. is responsible for the great fishing we have today, and will have in the future, and "you" can be a part of your fishing future.

Michael,
Yep it's worth it. You will learn. MI not only promotes stocking but education as well. They will also enter the fray when a battle needs to be fought like with the NMM clan on Lake Miltona.
$35 is not much money when you consider how much you'd spend on a bait or a weekend on your favorite lake.
If can be of any help, let me know.

The reasons to join MI are many, but for a new muskie angler, I would say that the best would be meeting lots of more experienced anglers and attending club outings.
I have added a new section to Muskie magazine called "current events" and it will include chapter outings, trips and things like that. Hopefully, it will give some of those that do not live close to a chapter, the chance to attend an outing or join a chapter weekend trip.

Like anything else in life, you get out what you put in. If you want to be a better musky nut then join, go to the meetings and get involved. Sure the magazine is great, but attending the meetings and getting to know other musky nuts is a great way to learn. I have met and talked with many great fisherman. I know my fishing has improved because of it. But you have to be willing to go and get involved. What can I do to help improve my musky fishing? What can I do to improve musky fishing for everyone? To paraphase J.F.K. Ask not what Muskie's Inc can do for me, rather ask, What can I do for Muskie's Inc? Can I help stock fish? Can I help raise funds to promote musky stocking. Can I help teach someone else my love for the sport and the fish. Can I take a disabled person out fishing for a day? Can I make my voice be heard when issues affecting my fishing come up. These are all things that you can do for others and yourself, when you get involved. It's up to you! Paul V. Twin Cities chapter

I would join Muskies Inc. if you find the rigth people there it can be an awesome source of information. Also I always thought the Magazine was worth the cost of membership.
To your second question, What is the best source of Musky info. Other than time on the water, which can be limited for some. I would say get yourself a subscription to Musky Hunter Magazine. It is the best source of info around from the new comer to the guy who thinks he knows everything. If you combine the Mag. with these message boards the knowledge you can gain is unlimited. It is cool to be able to go to the boards to ask questions about certain articles, most of the authors frequent one board or another.
Use what you want, but don't be afraid to ask questions.

I would say join. The benifits far out way any negatives. I am not a very outgoing person at first, but over time I was able to make some great fishing buddies and learn new lakes alot faster by being a member.
