I'm just getting into making some homemade tackle and I'm having some problems with tie bucktail. First, I would like to tie directly to the bucktail shaft instead of to the hook. Just incase need to replace the hook. I've read everything I could get ahold of about bucktail tying. My problem is when I tie on the hair in 2-3 bunches most of it falls out. What am I doing wrong? Do I need to let it dry between bunches ? Any help will be appreciated.

Don't tie it directly on the shank. I tie them now on coiled wire (available at Moore's Lures for a very sharp price) of 2" long. Just wrap a bottom-layer of tying tread. Apply some loctite glue. Leave about 0.5cm on each end uncovered, this is to prevent slippage of the bucktail-bunches. Now take a small bundle of bucktail and tie it on the coil. Do about 3 more to complete a circle and really tighten the tread whenyou wrap tread aorund the coil. Apply some loctite and let it harden (of course you can use head cement that fly-tiers use as well but I prefer the loctite glue). After it is dry move up about 0.5cm and make a new round. You should do this about 4 times to get to the top. then finish of the head with some epoxy-glue to get a nice finish and to protect the tread at the head. Be sure not to take the bundles of hair too thick because then the hair isn't really tied in but just pressed against the coil so when you pull it it comes loose. Normally you should look for wavy soft hair. Whenyou wrap the tread tightly, it flares out and then you know it is tied properly. Hope this helps. if you need any help, just ask!
