Is a HR worth $40 bucks...I see there are 3 or 4 styles, whats the deal with each? How about a $15.00 lure that does the same thing???

I have one HR. I swore I would not buy one because of the price. I broke down and bought one just to see. I am not sorry I did. It's a great glider and one of the easiest to work. They are much like a cobb's which are only 25 bucks but they may be a tick easier to work. 15 bucks easier? I have both and love them all. I think the price will sting untill you put it in the water.

I was in the same boat as ToddM, couldn't see paying $40 for just one lure, so I found one for $25 (gotta love the swap boards!!). I can say my Silver Blue Perch Shaker has been my #1 bait this fall, the glide is simple to work, and the muskies love to watch it. Only 4 biters so far on the bait, but one was an easy 45" and did have a 40"+ eat a sucker after following, too bad Boro f***ed up the hookset!!! Had one fish in the high 40s follow to the boat that looked to go a possible 30lbs and have had days of 7-10 follows on the thing, too bad not more eaters. Only thing is Jim Wilson who makes them has to be the biggest jack-a@@ in the industry, if you buy them, get it from a retailer, or you will be VERY SORRY!!! On the flip side, the coolest dealer in my opinion in the industry is Ben Clendening of Musky Maina Tackle, and their Magic Maker is nearly on par with the shaker, and is $15 cheaper, and easier to find.....and its smaller size probably makes it a better spring to summer lure.

Thanks Slamr...what is a Shaker? Is it a HR lure? Does it work like a Phantom? The phantom is a great bait for $19.00

Slamr is correct, buy an HR from a dealer. I don't know too many who will be doing future business with him after their orders have been filled however. The magic maker is a great bait and just as easy to work I must agree. So is the phantom but it has a different glide.

DN a phantom is awesome Ive had one tied on one of my rods all year...you should get a hughes river shaker or sometimes called a dropbelly too,,these have some awesome rock when they pause and unlike most glidebaits they stay rather deep which is nice once in a while,,they are worth $40 but throw them on at least 80lb superbraid or it will snap off on a backlash If you need to know where to get some I can help,,get the 8incher not the six

Slamr,

I see how you are. That fish followed my $12.00 bulldawg to the boat and then ate my sucker. Just because you spent $25.00 on a $40.00 lure doesn't mean it is bringing every fish to the boat.

Tired of paying the bucks.
$30 or higher for one jerk / glider?

Well, I'm starting to make my own Jerks for 2002.

Cherry, apple, maple, oak?

Disk sander, scroll saw and my air brush and see how I do.

I enjoy catching BIG fish on my homemade bucktails and leaders, so why not try to make a few Jerk / Gliders?

Patterns are not as inportant to me as basic colors, natural is best for waters I fish and my sytle or confidence level.

Inner body weight for looks and effect.

Sounds like a challange so I'm jumping right in.

Been studying the top of the line Jerk / Gliders for sometime and I'm onto what I feel are a few new styles fish have never seen and will maybe want to gobble instead of just follow and make friends with over and over again because they see them over and over again.
LOL

Wish me luck.

Will post progress and success rate in 2002.

I don't know what happended to my previous reply but I said that it is crazy to pay that much for one lure. I build my own jerkbaits, sure they take a lot of work and time. But this John Wilson guy can't be working on his own if he can supply that many baits. They get finished a lot faster and you can build loads of them if you have a team to divide the tasks. Lets keep it in perspective, shall we. When all is said and done, it's still a piece of wood with lead in it. And no paintjob is worth 40$, fish don't notice small details like gills and small fins or even nostrills. That's what I like about the cobb's gliders and crane baits: no fancy stuff, just good and solid baits. just my 2 cents here.

I have 4 HR and in my opinion, they are worth it! It's just something about them that muskies love to chase. The paint job is coming off two of them, just too many fish. I have 2 8" shakers, a straight 8" Pastika white flash and a 10" Okee perch, each have there time and place. The other posts don't lie, from what I hear trying to do business with HR maker is difficult at best. My first HR is in the bottom of Grindestone Lake near Hayward! Check the wear on your line! (hint) these baits are heavy and wear line quicker. Use at least 80lb spectra line and a good leader, I've been using the Terminator with good results.
My favorite is the straight 8" the action is great and is easier to throw than the shakers.
Pastika's have new ones in called the Enchanter, supposed to be a suspender with Suick like action but with the HR wobble and flash.
I think they are still $40, should be an interesting bait.

I didn't get a chance to try the magic maker, looks good from what i've seen. The phantom is another good one, people have had nice fish on them. Again, not much experience with it, always had the HR on.

These baits are very good! They have a time and a place. You can get them from www.pastikas.com
They did get some in, they also have there custom color the white chrome flash. Al and Sue are great people. I did see alot of them on ebay for sale. A gentleman from madison has purchased them from pastikas and now selling them on ebay. You also can try island sports in minociwa(sp?)

Sam S...OK you have 4 HR's...can you explain what is the Shakers action...what is the straight 8 inch Pastika...what is the action on the 10" Okee...how about the HR Top Prey bait?
Thanks for your help. Don't want to feed them $40 a lure until I know what the action of each bait is.

OK
The straight is in 6" and 8" and the 10" They glide from side to side they will stay at the depth you let them go to!

The dropbellies do the same thing but shake .

The enchanter has suick type action. It rises up at the end of the glide!.

He also made a hump back last year that one I did not get a chance to work.

The top prey is a walk the dog.

These bait work back and forth. like the others!

I will say this, many takle shops have alot of money in this guy and no baits. When those orders are finally filled and sold, there may not be too many more that will make a repeat order. I know some that won't. It's too bad because it's a great bait and given his reputation the only way I am buying one is grabbing it from a rack and paying for it.

It's pretty much what what lnp?200 said.
I feel the 8" straight is still the easiest to control, cast and they catch fish! The pastika's models are just custom colors made for the store, there are no changes in the bait. Al and Sue are great people, I can vouch for that.
