I humbly suggest the following idea for all you folks out there like me who love that beautiful body of water we call mille lacs. As you all know, especially those that are chomping at the bit waiting for ice, is that the resorts up there are hurting bad. I dont think there is a body of water anywhere that has a business that thrives on ice fishin revenue more thatn mille lacs. I have a feeling that there may even be a few less presents under the tree for a few of the tykes from the families that run some of these resorts. I know a few of these operations are right on the edge financially, and some are worse off yet. I suggest since we are not out there ice fishing that we jump in our cars and head up there anyway and have dinner at one of the resorts, maybe a couple of beers, drive around the lake, buy some gas, maybe have your propane tank filled, stop at one of the sporting goods stores and check out the new portables; whatever. I'm sure whatever you can do would help. Merry christmas to all
Great Idea, plus one!

Howdy mmillielacs!
If I lived closer I would!
But that brings up another point. You know that Mom n Pop baitshop you like so much? Or the eatem up joint you snowmobile to? Or your favorite warming up spot from ice fishing?
With this goofy weather, they are aching too. Drive out and have lunch at the trail side eatery. Stop in to the bait shop, look and see whats out on the shelves, have a pop and chat with them. Take Momma for a relaxing overnight at the ol resort. Make a weekend away for two.
I like the ease of on-line or catalog ordering as much as the next guy, but I will bend over backwards for a small shop that has always done me right.
Same for a good lunch or dinner. I am not opposed to driving an hour to get to a good place to eat. (If you have ever met me, you know that carries as much weight as I do!! :P ) Pick a nice Saturday or Sunday afternoon and take a drive.
Have fun, and Merry Christmas........R
to say the least, the mille lacs resorts need all the help we can give'em. in my forty plus years on the lake, this will go down as the latest 'driveable' ice i remember. this is now three out of the last five that have hurt. your suggestion is very welcomed and appreciated
by the mille lacs business community.

remember if we do not support them now they will not be around when we want them
Maybe when we're all done, we can drive to the car dealer and all get a new used cars. Since companies are offering 0% financing on new cars, dealers have a lot of used tin on their lot's that they can't get rid of.
After that, how about we go all buy a few things from some dot com companies. I hear they don't have any presents under their tree's.
Maybe after that we could all go buy a tv from the local tv dealer. I hear sales are down 18% from last year.
While I understand that times are tough for resort owners on Mille Lacs and every other lake in Minnesota, times are tight for everyone. If we all drive to Mille Lacs and get a bite to eat and have a few beers and fill up our cars with gas and our tanks with propane, the local guy will be hurting just as bad.
Resorts and bars and gas stations and car dealers and tv shops are all businesses. It's the risk you take when you put the "open" or "for sale" sign in your window.
While I certainly understand that things are not as good as possible for a resort owner, I think it's time we stop sheding a tear for the poor resort owners. In banner years I don't see them giving discounts because they have too much money. Don't get me wrong. I love to see the honest, hard working people who provide a fun service to the paying public thrive. But I also want to see the corner store bait salesman and the used car salesman and everyone else succeed too.
i guess when it is NATURE that strikes the blow, most people rally behind those who are hurting. is this situation regarding businesses
dependant on cooperating weather any different than the farmers having to be bailed out or at least having the public show concern? i'm sure the resort people, whether they are from the michigan u.p. or the ski slopes out west or the ice fishing businesses in northern minnesota, show concern for anyone hurting also. the original post here was a great gesture that reflects the image of most fishermen. do you fish?

Mother Nature.. the DNR.. whatever the case may be. Trust me. I do feel for the resort owners. I also feel for the farmers and everyone else who struggles to make a buck.
I'm all for rallying around those in a time of need. I'm just saying that it's the risk you take when you decide to go into the business. Nobody wants to rally around those that struggle to make ends meet year in and year out. Not just around the fishing season. As far as me, I spent close to 70 days on the lake last season drowning a guppie. Farming is a necessity. Fishing is not. I have as much concern for the resort owners as I do for any other businessman who is affected by weather or other cirumstances.
