I was inspecting my topraiders last night, and I noticed that a few have lost a majority of their clearcoat. It has peeled off, but the paint remains intact.

Has anyone else had the same problem? Will a gloss clearcoat paint take care of the problem?

I had the same problem with one of mine also. My problem is it was an exclusive from guides choice!! How do you replace something like that. the only option is to repair it. Any suggestions!!!

I suggest you add a few layers of clear parket lacquer because that one isn't very heavy and when applying it with a brush, you get a tough but light finish, which doesn't alther the action or balance of the TR

Six of mine got completly eaten.
Still look good, but not as pretty as NEW right out of da box.

Darn good bait, even though the finish got chewed, paint is still on tight.
Lots of teeth marks!

Replaced the tubing and rear hook a few times, but mine have been other wise SUPER TOUGH!

Just got my SUPER TopRaiders, and the look very promising.
;)

Good stuff.

I sense that Mr. Dietz's "kindheartedness" is in jeopardy of being abused. It seems that recently he has graciously offered to repair and replace "real" problems with his baits. However, it seems as if now everyone is trying to jump on the bandwagon and get some "free" lures. I hope this isn't the case, but it sure seems so....hmmmmm

I hope to crush every one's expectations by stating that Tom Dietz is a top-class guy but you have to send your lures before he sends the replacement ones. And only if they really show a problem. So, bad luck for the people who want to take advantage of Mr Dietz's generosity.

By the way, Mr Dietz also helped me out with a jointed shallwraider of wich the clear lacquer was peeling off. But overall speaking, the buchertail lures are tough.

Tom does seem very generous as far as fixing lures, but in my case with the top raiders, I want to find a good clearcoat to take care of this problem myself. Why spend $15 in shipping when I can throw some clearcoat on myself? The quality of these lures are unmatched. I have some wooden topwaters that have had the paint peel off totally without the help of some toothy fish hitting them! I have a lot of teeth marks on the TR's, but the paint is still fine!

The main question I have is what type of clearcoat do people use on their lures?

Got my Super Top Raiders the other day as well. Can't wait to use those bad dogs!

Happy Holidays all from Michigan!

Hi everyone! I checked out the board tonight (Christmas Eve) and saw this post. Let me add my two cents here and state that we did have a small run of Topraiders and Shallowraiders that had a problem with the clearcoat a little over a year ago. Luckily it was a small total number of lures and we nipped this problem in the bud. Our current finish is our original finish we've used forever and is tough as nails. Obviously if there is a serious flaw or defect, feel free to send the lure in for evaluation. If the lure simply has been fished a lot and has lots of hook wear and/or tooth wear, we cannot simply send someone a new lure. I hope this answers your questions, and regarding the custom color, if you have a flaw or defect send it in to me and I can see what I can do from this end. Thanks and I hope Santa was good to all of you!! See you in Chicago!

Sincerely,

Tom Dietz
