I'm thinking about buying myself a trolling rod for muskies for Christmas and would like to get some suggestions. I fish mostly in reservoirs in Ohio. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Buy yourself the best, a G-Loomis 7'10" trolling rod. Might cost you over $200 but will last you a lifetime.

Thanks for the reply Richard!

The G-Loomis is one that I'm considering. I've heard that glass is better than graphite in this situation. Is there any truth to that?

Tis true, glass rods are better suited for the pounding that they take while trolling big baits at big speeds. Not sure exactly why, but I think the glass is more giving, while the graphite would want to shatter.

I had a look at your homepage just now. Judging by your initials and the look of your lure, weren't you featured in this month's Muskie Hunter? That was a very interesting and informative article.

I have never broke a graphite rod and I have fished in freezing weather every year so far.

Only way I see you braking one would be by trolling plows a 5+ MPH and locking the drag as tight as you can and hit a good snag. And if you ever did break one they are garantied for life.

Actually the muskie series of rods Loomis started selling this year are primarily graphite but are blended with some glass (not just the scrim). Got this directly from Loomis. Great rods.

I have several: you definitely want the composite, not the pure graphite. Loomis is the way to go. Mark

Depends on how you troll. I like a heavy shorter rod if weeds are encountered often because you can rip the lure free of them with a big hookset move. If you use rod holders for more open water, I like a longer softer tipped rod to take up a little shock when a fish hits. Either way I'd use graphite. When I'm holding the rod as I usually do, I want to know what the lure is doing and glass doesn't do it like graphite. When you are trolling, the last thing you want to find is that for the last hour you had a bait screwed up when it should have been working for you.
