Angus,

two weeks back you posted the following reply to a post about using a Regal vice to tie bucktail coils.
:I also have a Regal vice. This is going to sound a little strange, but this is what I do. I took one of those metal stiffening pieces from a windshield wiper (it's flat about 1/32" thick and 3/32" wide) and folded it in half so it looks like a pair of tweezers. Then I cut it down to about 4 or 5 inches long. Now , I just slide a coil on the "tweezer" and clamp it in the Regal vice. The coil fits tightly and won't spin. The Regal holds both ends of the "tweezer" perfectly steady.

I understand the part of making the tweezers, But I'm not quite clear what you do with them to hold the coil firmly and then removing the bucktail coil after it's tied, if you slide the coil on to one arm of the tweezer, clamp it down in the vice, one arm would be on the outside of the coil? if you can clarify this it would be appreciated.

Thanks for you reply
Bud

Bud,

You slide the coil over both legs of the "tweezer" so it snugs up tight to the hinge of the "tweezer". Then both legs are together and can be clamped in the Regal Vice. The 2 legs together are a tight fit for the Regal's jaws. I just modified my "tweezer" this week. I shortened one leg by about an inch. Now I just clamp the longer leg in the vice. It is a lot easier to remove & replace when changing coils than clamping two legs.

It's kind of an odd ball device, but it's simpler than it sounds and works well.

Bud,

I didn't completely answer your question. You take the "tweezer" out of the vice each time you put a coil on or take one off. If I haven't explained it well, let me know. I can e-mail you a picture.

Thanks Angus,

I think I get it now, the "tweezers" arn't used as tweezers to clamp the coil but rather as a friction fit insert IN the coil.

Thanks Much going to give it a try

May the Winter be short for you (the Chicago Musky show, and tying bucktails will help make it shorter for me)

Exactly. It's a friction fit inside the coil. The word tweezers was a little misleading.
