View Full Version : Modifying Jakes/JLong?

Did you once post that you've modified some crankbaits by injecting silcone into the bait and allowing it to set upside down to increase the roll of the bait when you twitched? If so, have you done this w/ 10" Jakes? What were your results?
Now that Xmas is over, I'm planning to do some tinkering soon to: 1) get more depth out of my Jakes, and 2) get more roll on the twitch. Normal weighting works OK, but looking for something a little different.
Thanks!

Hiya,
Here's one to try. Works on Slammers, and I bet it would on Jakes, though you'd have to fiddle with the weight amount and location.
Basically what you need to do is get some of the JB weight system inserts for plastic baits (I think someone besides JB makes them now...) Insert them in the *sides* of the bait just behind the lip, above the centerline of the bait. When you are done, it looks like the bait is wearing earmuffs. By messing with the weight, you can get a lot of funky things going on.
Another option is to drill a hole through the side of the bait and out the other side, then inserting a rigid brass tube through the hole, cut it flush with the side of the bait, and epoxy it in. Instert either some pencil lead, or a couple of ball bearings (they roll around) or even just some water (will very slightly alter the bouyancy) then tap in ball bearings slightly larger than the tube, or just epoxy the lead in. Another deal where you have to mess with weight and location, but the possibilities are endless.
Finally, just add some water to them. Drill a hole in the top, squirt water in with a syringe till you get the bouyancy you want, and epoxy a round-head screw into the hole. They run deeper, and roll more, but have to be worked more slowly.
There. That should give you enough ideas to ruin at least $100 worth of Jakes...and maybe even get a few that work
Cheers,

Brian,
RK has some cool ideas. He also points out an obvious side-effect of tinkering. Be prepared to create more DUDS that WINNERS... which can be costly.
For Jakes, I like to fill them with Great Stuff... a urethane foam. Then you can work with them just like wood. The newer 10" Jakes have two compartments/chambers, so it now requires more holes (four holes - two to insert the spray and two vents to ensure the entire bait gets filled) to fill them up... but no big deal. I like to counterweight my jakes (lead in the nose and tail) to make them turn a little better when twitched. I also like to weight them on TOP along the back above the front hook hanger. This really helps exaggerate the roll. I have some that will roll onto their side and then take almost 1/2 a second before they correct themselves. This produces some sweet action of the lure while you are reeling in the slack line, where a standard lure would not have any action at all at that point in your retrieve.
The silicone trick is one I use on ERNIES since they have so many chambers and are difficult to fill with foam. The chamber directly above the front hook hanger has the rattle. Drill a hole on top of the lure, fill the chamber about 1/4 full of silicone, hold the bait upside down so the lead weight fills the hole and let it set up.
Good Luck.

Guys why not fish grandmas instead they have a considerate more amount of roll then jakes

me,Tom B,Juris, went out for pizza last week and afterwards stopped at a bar,,we all were freaked out by the waiter because he could have been your twin, Tom even called the guy over and asked him what his last name was because he thought he had to be a relative and told him he had a twin in the world, Its the cardinal bar on 38th in so mpls if you talk to Tom soon ask him about it,,,the thing that really freaked us was when we were leaving he was getting off his shift and I noticed has he was driving away his car was painted in jailbiird color !!
