Hello,
Just thought that some of you would enjoy this quote. A good friend, and someone I respect in many ways, sent it to me so I thought I would pass it on.
"The longer I fish the stronger I feel that one way to get the dope on a man fast is to watch him fish; it swiftly separates the men from the boys. I mean not only watching his technique or lack of it and actual manner of casting and the like, but looking for less obvious but possibly more subtle clues to the inner man, such as how he handles a fish, once caught, including how he removes and returns it as well as observing such loftier portents as his approach and general attitude toward his fishing and indeed toward the whole outdoors." -Robert Traver

I don't believe that he is judging people harshly. He is just trying to figure out what makes people, in general, tick. But I see your point.

IT'S A NEAT QUOTE. KEEP IN MIND THAT LIKE MOST QUOTES, THIS ONE PROBABLY CAME FROM SOMEWHERE IN A STORY/ EXPLAINING SOMETHING GREATER. MAYBE IN A "PROOF IS IN THE PUDDING" SENSE.
REMINDER: ALWAYS CONSIDER TO BE CAREFUL NOT TO TAKE A QUOTE OUT OF CONTEXT (EVEN THO THIS ONE IS COOL AS I'VE SEEN AS A STAND-ALONE QUOTE).
JOHN- YOU'D BETTER CONSIDER FISHING ALONE IF YOU WANT TO AVOID BEING SIZED-UP BY YOUR FRIENDS. THERE'S NO WHERE TO HIDE---

Traver "Ways of a Fisherman" continued:
"I should warn that you may not find too many fish on your line watching other men trying to get fish on theirs, but you will, if you can interpret what you see, get a pretty good line on the character you bother to watch."
"...if indeed it proves anything, that kindred fishermen quickly recognize each other and that this recognition forms a bond of toleration for their differences perhaps rarely found, much less ever equaled, in other pastimes or walks of life."
..."In saying this I don't mean to imply that our way is the only way, or the better way, or the more virtuous way, or the flower-strewn way to catching more fish or having more fun. Not even faintly. All I am trying to say is that we curious fisherfolk fish for many things in many ways; that we quickly spot any kindred souls, and that this mutual shock of recognition forms a powerful, forgiving bond even if in other areas we may be poles apart (no pun). Nor do I imply that men must fish alike in order to hit it off, because I know dozens of misguided souls I have a ball fishing with who wouldn't fish my way for all the oil in Araby, or I theirs." -Traver

I'm with Traver!
