What is your opinion of buzzbaits?
Personally, I think they are an under-rated and under-fished musky lure. I have caught a few muskies on a Windel's Buzzbait and know of some serious fish caught on Boogerman's, but even I only use buzzbaits when " it feels just right". I know muskies will pound them if they are in a reed pattern.:) and they are also pretty good hookers and holders. Any of you Vermillion guy's hitting the rocks with them??
I would like to find a buzzbait similair to a boogerman but heavier. Has anyone tried crimping a rubbercore on a boogerman, they are too light in my opinion.
Let's hear from some buzzbait fans!
Thanks,

Easiest bait to use when you're fishing weed tops at night. I'm a big fan (about 6', 235) of Buzzbaits.

Never have caught a fish on one. BUT! the biggest fish I have ever seen came up behind a booggerman buzzer. I figure the fish hit 40 pounds plus. She rose up right behind it opened her jaws, closed her jaws and sank straight down and was gone. I lay awake at night and think about that fish! I saw her open her mouth about 2 inches behind it and I have no idea why she didn't hit it. Oh Well that's muskie fishing.

I've found the old Marathon Muskie Hawks work real well. Easy to cast and to retrieve; but becoming harder to find for a fair price.

On Lake St. Clair the Muskie season doesn't open until june, so I spend a lot of time chasing Pike till I can legally fish for Muskies. Post spawn Pike will go NUTS trying to get a buzzbait (just a 1/2oz bassbait with a long trailer). I have caught many a smaller Muskie on one while chasing the Pike, but nothing over 44".

Hi Brett,
I use them all summer on Vermilion, I
love them in the early morning over the
reed beds.
They will also call up fish from the rocks at the right time, fish as deep as 15ft have come up a blasted my buzz!
I have just recently designed a buzzer
for a spinnerbait company in Texas, I hope they will be available soon in my neck of the woods.
I also have a new double buzz that I think is going to do well. I'm not sure
but I haven't seen to many double buzz
baits in the stores, and they work. :)

My biggest fish two out of the past three years hs come on a Boggerman. They work best for me when its windy and fish are shallow but I have had lots of success on quiet waters also. Adjust the blade to clack when its windy and not when its calm. The rubber core thing I tried this summer, putting it on the shaft in front of the head. Casting distance was impressive but hooking% went down. I believe the drop in hooking% was due to the bait hanging up on the sinker not sliding thru the fishes mouth to the hooks. The custom models with hair and built in trailer hooks seem to work the best .

Biggest i have caught on a buzzbait was 45" on a boogerman that absolutely crushed it. 45" to me is a big fish so i was pleased. I really dont see alot of people using them.

Sounds like its a good bait for you guys too. I'm hoping to have a lure maker design a few heavier ones for me to try next season. When muskies are in the shallow reeds they don't like them to get away.
Bubs,
I don't recognize your user name..E-mail me at bjwaldera@i29.net if you need to get a hold of me. Thanks
Thanks for you responses and good fishing!

Hi Brett,
I love buzzbaits. Especially in early- to mid-summer, they can be awesome. Boogermans are OK, but a pain to cast. I usually just buy the ones with rubber skirts and put a trailer hook on them, or trim the hair on the Thorne Bros. custom ones way way down - with all that hair and the blade, it's like casting a pillow. The other down side to Boogermans is they aren't very durable. A couple fish and they've had it usually. Which is ok I guess, if it's the right fish.
Really though, I like in-line buzzers better. Bucher used to make a great one, and I wish they'd bring it back (Tom, you hear that? Pretty please? :) ) As Mike mentioned, Marathon Musky Hawks were awesome, but are alas also no longer made. (FYI, I have a standing offer to buy or trade for any Musky Hawks - email me at rirk@black-hole.com if you have some...) Mark Windels makes a pretty good buzzbait, and CJ's has a nice one too - used it last year and did well on it.
Brett: Try a buzzbait on the lake in the park some evening - you'll get hurt.
Cheers,
RK

Would any front prop bait be considered a buzz bait? Or are they only baits that you need to run fast on top because they sink.
Just wondering.
Brett, you been ice fishing in the park lately?

They are a great bait to use and I am presentl experimenting with a prototype that has t
wo 3 winged prop on it side by side that you can really work slow. I also employ a treble hook on these and feel it increases the hooking percentage.
