I have a question for everyone....I found what appears to be a good deal on a 1998 60 HP Merc.

I have the following questions:
It's a 2 stroke right??
Is it oil injected or do you mix the fuel??

Does anyone have any experiences with this motor???

Thanks for all of your advice.

If its a 1998, it is most likely a 2 stroke that is oil-injected. I don't think Merc had a 4-stroke in 98, but I might be wrong. They are good motors otherwise. I have yet to hear a bad thing about them. Just make sure it is really a Merc and not a Force. Some people try passing off Force motors as Mercs and they are not the same. Mercs good. Force not so good.

Good luck.

Yes, it would be a 2 Stroke and Oil Injected. I had a '96 60hp Merc (basically same as a '98) and ran it for 5 seasons with very good luck until I traded it for a '01 90hp Merc. I didn't have an hour meter on it but every year I reset the trip log on the depth finder and averaged about 750 miles a season. Besides normal end of year maintenance (proper winterization, lower unit oil change, etc), no problems whatsoever! Put in a new set of plugs after 1st three seasons. Oh yeah, I did run only premium unleaded as I do with all my outboards.

I can honestly say the 60 was much easier starting and much quieter than the new '90. I just wanted to go faster and max out the hp rating on my Lund.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

If 2 stroke...is an AWESOME/warhorse motor! Quiet, durable, & efficient. Can't kill it (oil injected/ reservior in housing by the way). I have a '96 which is identical to a '98. Also have a new '00 50 HP for sale (same design as new 60- different RPMs).

How much for the 60? $2600 is fair if in exclnt condition.

How does it compare to $3100 for a new one?

I have a '98 merc 60 on my boat. Great motor and never a lick of trouble. The only thing it does is loades up when you run it tilted up, will smoke for about 30 sec. when you bring it back down. It is oil injected.

Get it if it's a deal.
