I bought a Daiwa SG47LC after doing similar research to what you're doing now. It was rated favourably by many muskie guys, guides included. I bought one and have been very happy with it. I use it for salmon in the spring, then muskie, then salmon, and back to muskie for fall trolling. I have caught both types of fish on it and the reel works great!

Cheers,

Another vote for the Diawa SG47LC line counter reels. I have 2 and love them.

Make that three for the SG47LC! I tried a buddy of mine's and liked it so much I bought myself one for Christmas. Can't wait to break it in!

"okuma matada". I have four and I love them. Had two diawas and just sold them. They are more compact and the new ones have aluminum spools and the diawas have graphite. They are cheaper too 59 vs. 95 bucks.

I'm also using Okuma. I use the Magda Pro model 20DX. They are about the same size as a Garcia 6500, come with two different handles (single and double paddles), two ball bearing, 5.1-1 gear ratio, and a very smooth drag. For more details here's their web site.

Got them last summer and used them all fall, so far they have been very nice.

Being a walleye fisherman mainly I do a lot of trolling and I can tell you from experience to buy the Diawa's. I have some SG47LC's that are pushing 10 years old and are still working great. If you don't need the line capacity you can use the 27's. But with muskies I'd probably stick with the bigger ones. Also make sure you buy the SG47LC, not the 47LC.

Like Doug Johnson,I also use Okuma Reels!I use the bigger version of the Linecounter, the Magna 30DX.Make sure you purchase the 30DX model, not the 30D model it has bushings instead of berrings and will not hold up as long.I also use the Titus 50L Leverdrag Levelwind Reels for Leadcore Line,The drag system is the best thing going for trolling aplications, can be preset for trolling and once you stop the boat, push the drag lever forward to the stop button to your preset fighting drag that is tighter, but not to the point where the fish can bend the hooks or break the line, you can't over tighten without pushing the button to let the lever continue in the tightening direction.
