Cast-n-blast

I have been fumbling around with various lure designs and have tried to use a variety of woods in the process. I've use maple, oak, basswood, pine, and alder. All of these woods seems to work well, but each behaves a bit differently.
My question is what type of wood have some of you "tackle box tinkerer's" used and what seems to be your favorite? What wood is easier to use and to get it to that neutrally bouyant state?
I've found oak to be heavy and not so great to cast. Oak also seems to move a lot slower in the water.
Pine is light and floats so easy that it requires lots of weight to keep it down. Alder is the same. So is basswood. Maple is somewhat lighter than oak and seems to be similar. Hardwood or soft? Any good tips on weighting these lures? Any advice to narrow down my search for the perfect wood is appreciated! Thanks
