I live in the Spicer, Minnesota area and I have to drive a minimum of 50 miles to fish muskies. Does anyone have any suggestions or knowledge of how to go about getting the DNR to stock one of my area lakes with Muskies?

I'm still supriesed that they haven't stocked Green yet. It's a deep lake with a population of tuliby's, smallies and walleye. I've heard that there are some muskie in there that escaped from the New London fishery. That lake could hold a record if they ever stocked it. Talk to the MDNR and see what they say.

I grew up just ten miles from Green Lake over by Paynesville. Was out at the farm last fall hunting pheasants and had a chance to talk to the local Game Warden as he made his yearly "hows it going" and "can he can hunt on our farm" visit. Anyways, got to talking to him about Muskie stocking and he said the DNR is trying to get Green Lake stocked with Muskies, but the local Walleye fishermen are opposing it. I believe that it will take some local involvement with the sportsman clubs and property owners to get these people on board.
Having fished those lakes extensively years ago, I can say the forage is incredible. There are huge numbers of carp, bullheads, white suckers, redhorse suckers, ciscos, perch, shiners, chubs, and you name it. Those Muskies won't be eating many walleyes there. Not with that forage. The problem would be catching them because they'd be fat and happy most of the time.:)
I'd like to see Green stocked too and add Koronis to the list as well. Those two lakes could both produce world record class fish.
Good luck.

My grandparents live on Green. When I was young, I saved all my money up and bought an old 14'er with a 5-1/2 johnson and fished the west side of the lake all summer every summer. I haven't fished it in years, but I hear the walleyes as so plentiful they're annoying. I'll talk to the DNR reps and our next MI meeting about bringing it up. If that lake did get muskies, they'd have legals withing 4-5 years with all the forage. Keep us posted with what you find out.

Copper,
We had Jim Lilleinthal (area fisheries Manager for the Little Falls area) as our speaker a few months ago at our Muskies Inc. meeting.
The topic of stocking Green Lake came up, and Jim said that it is seriously being considered. The main hurdle in these situations is the Lake Associations, they are the ones that we need to educate and inform.
Have a good one!

* Lake Alexander is a Prime example, the Lake Association realized that angling for all species is at an all time high! The Walleyes are at record levels, even with a thriving Muskie population!
The Lake Association is leaving it up to the DNR. Why fix it if it 'aint broken?

Another thing that would be nice about stocking Green is there are actually three lakes in the system. Calhoun, which is right down the Middle Fork Crow River, and Ness Lake which is just above it are full of baitfish of all types. The numbers of bullheads and carp in these lakes is almost rediculous and a population of Muskies would really help to trim them down.
Just wonder how we could approach the Lake Association with some of the benifits of adding Muskies.
I know that the DNR was, at one time, considering stocking Koronis with Muskies. But the locals decided they didn't want to because they wanted to continue spearing Northerns in the winter.
Wish I had more time and could get involved out there. I still know a lot of people in that area. Hmmmmmm. Might have to make a few phone calls.:)
