While I agree with the others, my choice is the Shimano Calcutta 400 and a St. Croix 7-7'6" rod. In my opinion they are the best all around set-up you can get. I have fished with the cheap stuff (I'm not saying that is what they suggest) and was very disappointed after losing a huge fish because the rod could not set the hook.

My choice would be a 6500 and a Gander series 7-7'6"MH with power pro or tuff line. Plenty of rod to rip lip and a great reel. A long as you dont have the Richard Simmons style hook set, you'll have no problems..

I second the Shimano Curado, but I'd pair this reel with a St Croix 7 foot Premier or Avid series rod (MH)...And yes - 50 pound Power Pro will do the job!

MuskieMike,

You might want to go out to muskiefirst.com and check out the auction going on for Ashton. Look at item number 33. Theres a 7 foot St. Croix rod, a Diawa reel, four good lures, and a couple tee-shirts. Take a look. Its going pretty cheap right now.
