I have been kicking around the idea of forming a Sportsmen's Coalition for some time. Would it matter to people here if it was a for-profit organization?
My problem is I don't have the time or money to do something like this with out being able to make money at it. The concept screams for it to be not for profit, but the idea I had wasn't really to get charitable donations. I was thinking more about an organization that would give all sporting organizations national support and awareness.
For example: Steve Heiting wants us to help out with a letter writing campaign to get a 50" limit passed on lakes in Oneida County. Through the Sportsmen's Coalition every TU member, BASS member, NRA member, Ducks unlimited member, etc. would be aware of what Steve is trying to accomplish and he would receive many more responses than he is able to do himself. Or, a local TU chapter is trying to get a dam removed out east to open up miles of spawning habitat for Atlantic Salmon. All of the above mentioned organizations would be aware of this and be able to help.
The possibilities are endless. What do you guys think?

Actually, you could form a coalition as a section 503.c non-profit, yet still draw a salary as an officer. By non-profit, the meaning is only to the shareholders, not the employee(s). United Way is a non-profit but its president makes more than most all of us on this board, combined! Non-profit definitely would to your advantage when fundraising and seeking sponsorship. There are certain rules set down by the IRS to obtain non-profit status, but it's not very difficult. There are several kits on the market for just such a set-up. I used to be an amateur bicycle racer and I incorporated our team as a non-profit to facilitate sponsorship.

Thanks for the tip WD. I'll have to bring this all to my accountant once I find out how feasible the idea is. I should hopefully know within a few weeks.
