I am thinking of trading in my 98 Z71 for a 2001 Duramax. Anybody have any good or bad experiences with one?. My 98 has had its share of problems so I am hoping to cut my losses. Thank you for the input. That diesel sure sounds like a bad mother.

So far so good. Excellent power and torque. 300hp and 525 ft lbs at 1800 rpm. Mileage reports are good. 15-20mpg. A bit pricey with the allison trans. About $6,000 for the option. If you have a need for it go for it.

There are rumors of head problems. I could imagine head gasket problems, with that aluminum head. These rumors aren't coming from rival dealers, but from farmer motorheads.
Maybe they aren't letting the engine warm up enough before putting the load to it. My childhood neighbors have a problem treating their trucks as well as they do their tractors. Must have someting to do with the difference in replacement cost.

I too am seriously considering the purchase of a 2500HD with the DMAX/Allison combo. I found a webpage that you might want to check out... A ton of various diesel owners...

I have a 2001 and have 4800 miles on it. The largest load I pulled with it is my Yarcraft Storm and I do not even it's back there when I am going down the road. For what I am using the truck for, I probably did not need a truck like this, but once I drove it I was hooked. There was definitely a question of want and need when I bought it!!
Anyway, the truck has been trouble free for me. It is really quiet for a diesel and I have also been getting between 15-20 miles per gallon. I have been reading on a few websites about other Duramax owners had some trouble with their rigs. You may also want to check out the forums on www.thedieselpage.com.
Bottom line is I would buy the truck again with no reservations.
Good luck..

I pull the RCL trailer with a 3500 duramax/allison. This truck has all the power you will ever need to pull your boat. I haven't had any trouble with this truck, about 16,000 miles now. I get around 11mpg with the trailer and around 15mpg without it depending on the wind, the trailer is tall, long and catches alot of wind but I pull as fast as I want to.
