View Full Version : Need help choosing rad dog lures for Rainy Lake
I have heard good things about the rad dog spinnerbaits and I will be fishing the rainy lake system in June and would like some help picking out a few of these lures for my tackle box. Any suggestions on colors or overall selection?
I would also appreciate any locations on Rainy lake that I should hit as well as lure presentation.
Also any other lure assistance would be great. I don't have a lot of experience.
Thanks in advance.

For Rad dogs I would recomend a brown one with gold or copper blades and make sure you do not forget your surface lures

Right on with brown/brass. I also like red/nickel on Rainy.
As long as you are in Red Gut Bay, fish anything and everything.

Ditto to what John and Musky45 said. Raddogs are king in the ribbon grass! Surface baits can be a real hit if the conditions are right. Don't be scared to run a suick through the pockets of the cabbage or bang a few rocks with it. Picked up a 39" snaking a suick through the cabbage last year.
As for spots, last year on opener they were already out of the spawning bays and on classic musky stucture. Seemed a bit early but don't over look it.
If your on Redgut on opener and see a big red lund pro-v with "Muskie Hunter" on the side, please say hello.
Good Luck,

Bow,
What area are you staying at? What size of boat?
I am not familiar with the Rad's, but I do use Grim Reaper Spinner Baits alot. Doug has come up with many good colors and baits that fit my fishing to a T. I really like orange and black for some of Rainy, I like nickel and red for another area. I use gold and yellow exclusively in another, Perch, Chartruese and the list goes on.
Rainy's water ranges from tanic bog stained, to iron stained to mostly clear. So in other words have a good colour selection and of course some "Grim Reapers". I also do well with their "Buzzer" around the opener.
Good Luck

Actually, I would give Mike a call (320) 253-3261. He makes Rad dogs and goes to Red Gut ALOT. He will more than likely be at the Mn Muskie Expo, so you could look him up there.

I am staying at Lake Despair Lodge on the Northwest side of Rainey. I have an 18 foor 1850 Crestliner with 130hp.
By the way where is red gut bay?
Thank you for all of the responses.

If you are staying at the "Lake Despair Lodge", then, you will be staying on "Lake Despair". You can put your boat into North West Bay a few miles from the camp and the ramp is fine.
There are no muskies to speak of in that section of the lake(Rainy). It would be a 40 mile boat ride before you were into good muskie water. You must get the hydro maps before even attempting this. It maybe actually a little too much for your first trip to navigate the water, to get you into muskies on Rainy from the far west end of the lake.
You are, in great pike water, in that section, you will be staying next to (north west bay and the north arm of Rainy). No Fear Though! There are muskies in the Despair chain and some really good fish to boot. Virtually no one else fishes them on that chain except for a few old reclusives. Getting info on the muskies there, is like pulling teeth. Check out Manomim lake on the west end of Despair and fairly close to camp. This area should keep you busy for awaile. It has some good spawners coming out of the shallows during the time period you will be there. Pay close attention at the mouth of Manomin and the reeds. The water is fairly clear on Despair.
Good Luck

Great Waters is a bluffer. NW area is a musky soup if there ever was one!
Best part is the lack of pressure. Especially during late season.
