View Full Version : Line counters for leadcore?

I'm sure this has been discussed before but I can't find anything in archives. Anyway, what reels are the best for leadcore. I've seen a lot of votes for various Penn models. If your counting colors, is there any advantage to a line counter or is it just personal preference.

Personal pref!
I prefer to just look at the line counter and know where I am at rather then try to remember what color to stop at. Either way a Daiwa line counter is one of the best reels for the job. Abu Garcia also makes a nice 7000 level wind for the job.
the main thing is line capacity

Personally i like the sg 47 lc's from daiwa for lead i use the 27's for pulling my dipseys and all my board lines. i like the convinence of just looking down and knowing how much is out cuz im usually setting multiple lines fixing autopilot etc at the same time makes life easier........Fish on........Instigator#735

How many colors of leadcore can one get on the Daiwa SG47LC reels? I was told that this reel could handle the full 10 colors of 18 lb. leadcore from a spool. Could someone confirm this or give an accurate number on the number of colors of line? I wish everyone a Happy:) Holiday season. Thanks!!

I have lead core on a Penn GTI 310 and a 47 LC. I would much rather use the Penn over the
47, call it personal preference. The Penn will hold right at 10 colors of 18 lb. lead. I usually
just load 9 so I have a little more room on the reel. The Penn 320 is also a very good reel. with either the 47 or the Penn I don't think you can go wrong. One way that I keep track of leadcore on the PEnn is to tie a rubber band on the leadcore at 5 colors this so I can keep track of where I am at by looking at the spool.

I personally think that the larger the spool diameter the easier and quicker it is to get the lead core into the water. I like the Penn reels for the simple reason that they have a very large line capacity making it possible to have considerable backing on the reel in addition to your lead core. I printed out on my printer in small text the lead core colors in the order in which they are on the reel. For example 1)Red, 2)Green 3) Yellow, etc I tape this small piece of paper on my rod above the reel. Anyone who picks up the rod can tell instantly what is say the 6th color. Other people always put their leadcore on in the same color order which is fine until you get snagged and loose several colors.

Todd_NE, thanks for information on the number of leadcore colors. I should have included this in my first question but didn't, how much if any mono backing would also be able to be placed on the reel? Thanks for your response:)!

I have always just counted colors. Seems like unneeded expense if it is strictly going to be used for leadcore. I always put 100 yards of dacron backing under the leadcore just in case I run into a big Brown.

I'm running mine off the Penns and several Okuma 30's. I have 6 reels that I set up with different amounts segmented in. No counting colors, just have the proper reel on.

I have two 47's set up for leadcore and can get 8 colors of 18# leadcore plus the leader comfortably. NO mono backing. Unless you want the linecounter, go with the big 310 or 320 Penns - they are the smoothest and most reliable for the price - bulletproof. If only we could get 310 and 320's with a reliable mechanical linecounter!

A lot may depend on how you intend to use the leadcore. I have two Penns with mono backing and one with 3 colors and the other with 4 colors then a 50 leader of mono. I can let out all the colors and some mono before attaching it to an inline board. Using it that way you dont need a counter. I do have an older penn209 with almost all leadcore. If you dont need a counter, the penn 320gti's cant be beat.
my 2 cents.
I get 10 colors of 12lb. leadcore and a 30' mono leader on a SG27LC. I switched from counting colors to the linecounter and I like it much better, don't have to pay as much attention when letting out line.

I use line counter reels for my lead core but only because I have trouble seeing the colors in low light.

No disagreement, just another opinion.
1. IF you need all the leadcore you can get - 10 colors or more, it rules out a 47.
2. Expense wise, a 47 is only $70 if you look at all for them. That is pretty cheap for a good reel, and less than the 310 or 320.
3. 209's are ok, if you want to reel all day
4. I think highly of linecounters in water down to say 40-50' deep where you can reach with 6 colors or so when trolling slow because I LIKE to use linecounters. I'm a dummy, I can remember 225 better than I can remember to count colors or set a rubberband. Plus, I'm just used to that from running linecounters for everything else.
5. Like anything, it's what you like to do. Fish don't care what reel you use.
6. Reelman, the best troller I know uses the Penn's. I guess that tells you something about me. Hehehe.
To each his own.

I use the Okuma line counters. They are cheaper and you can get 8 colors on them.
