There is an argument in the office about spear fishing and whether you can put egg shells or other bright items down the hole on the lake floor for better spearing success. I thought it was illegal but cannot find proof from the Minnesota DNR site. Am I wrong? and can you point me to the facts either way?

I know my dad used to put down oyster shells they came in 50# bags but that was a long time ago. I don't spear but I have heard of guys putting down sheets of tin with a rope on it so that it can be recovered. If is not recoverable in Mn. anyway I think it is considered littering. Having a muskrat come up into my house cured me of my spearing days.

Don't know about Mn. law, but here it is common to put down frozen egg shells when ice fishing.

In General Restrictions section of the Mn regs it states - Littering of "ANY MATERIAL" or depositing rubbish.....

I consider egg shells a material. See Link:

That is the arguement I stood on as well. Since it is technically littering, you can't do it. A removable sheet would work like what Chuck suggested.

Thanks guys!

Have a Merry Christmas or what ever, I am Lakoe of the Woods bound. I get to watch the wind make ice mountains on the shore. :-(

Aquaman,
I'm not sure where the reg is, but last time I asked a DNR person, they assured me that it was illegal.

We used to use the ground up oyster shells farmers feed chickens.
