View Full Version : What are the best spring lures and how deep will the 'skies be?
I posted about the Creek Chub Pikie and got a reply that they were great in the fall. What are you guys using in the spring? How deep should I be fishing. When fishing in the deeper waters how about on top lures? I'm new at it and plan on spending alot of time on Webster this year, any help would be appreciated.
Although my "spring muskie fishing" will begin much later than most people (end of May) I don't think that will change what works. I always catch muskies at the start of the season on small bucktails. Mepps #5, you can fine tune the color and the blade to the lake and conditions that you are fishing.
The way I see it, which may be on target or way off, is that muskies will chase the smaller baits early in the year because they have a lot more energy with the water warming up and feel like using some of the energy. Kind of like having that first cup of coffee in the morning!
As far as what depths the muskies will be at.. hmm I fish relatively shallow for them in spring (no greater than 15 feet of water) but that certainly doesnt mean that they aren't in deep water. I stick to the newly growing weedbeds, sandbars, and rocky areas that have produced fish in the past.

On our lakes I have been trolling deep water the month of June and part of July. Been trolling Beleivers over 40-80 feet running about 15 feet down and averaging a fish about every 1-2 hours with a average size of 40". The big fish seem to stay out deep and only small fish in the shallows. Brian
