Looks like I'll be spending a week at Plum Lake on a family vacation in early July. I'm told this is a Class A muskie(musky?)lake. Anybody have any expenience, comments, observations, on Plum Lake they'd be willing to share?
Thanks,
Mark

I have not gone there for quite a few years because of what I will describe to you, but this is what I know about it. Plum has traditionally been a very difficult lake to fish because it is deep and has a ton of underwater structure, but in recent years it has become even more difficult because of an infestation of Rusty Crayfish in the lake. Because of the Rusty's, the lake is basically devoid of weeds now, especially "good" weeds. There are certainly big ski's in there, but without any weeds to speak of, plus the cisco forage, they stay deep all the time and it is extremely difficult to locate them. Because there is no motor trolling allowed on any Vilas County lake, even if you do find the schools of ciscoes, it is almost impossible to get a lure to work effectively at those depths without trolling. All I can suggest is to try to find the schools of panfish that will just roam around because of the lack of weeds. There are also some cribs scattered around that may hold some pans. If you find the baitfish, you should be able to see a few skis. Also try around any remaining weeds you can find, even if they are not what are considered "good" weeds. Definitely an "experts" type of lake before the Rusty's, and now even moreso.

I had also heard the same story at one point. On the other hand I did hear that the Crayfish had all but disappeared because they ate their food supply up. I had heard the weeds were on their way back as a result. Maybe someone from up in that area would have a little more insight.
Good Luck and Be Safe,

theedz, I hope that is true. Like I said, it has been quite some time since I have fished there because it had gotten so tough. I would love to hear some updated info on it from those who frequent the Lake. In recent years I have switched my efforts in the Sayner area to other lakes and have stayed away from Plum altogether.
