I know this isn't fishing, but I thought I'd post this letter that was sent to me in hopes of provoking some thoughts and prayers for our military kids that won't be here for the holidays...Merry Christmas, Sluggo (Chris)

This is an e-mail from a young ensign aboard USS Winston Churchill (DDG-81) to his parents. (Churchill is an Arleigh Burke class AEGIS guided missile destroyer, commissioned March 10, 2001, and is the only active US Navy warship named after a foreign national.).

Dear Dad,
We are still at sea. The remainder of our port visits have all been cancelled. We have spent every day since the attacks, going back and forth within imaginary boxes drawn in the ocean, standing high-security watches, and trying to make the best of it. We have seen the articles and the photographs, and they are sickening. Being isolated, I don't think we appreciate the full scope of what is happening back home, but we are definitely feeling the effects.
About two hours ago, we were hailed by a German Navy destroyer, Lutjens, requesting permission to pass close by our port side. Strange, since we're in the middle of an empty ocean, but the captain acquiesced and we prepared to render them honors from our bridgewing. As they were making their approach our conning officer used binoculars and announced that Lutjens was flying not the German, but the American flag. As she came alongside us, we saw the American flag flying half-mast and her entire crew topside standing at silent, rigid attention in their dress uniforms. They had made a sign that was displayed on her side that read "We Stand By You." There was not a dry eye on the bridge as they stayed alongside us for a few minutes and saluted. It was the most powerful thing I have seen in my life. The German Navy did an incredible thing for this crew, and it has truly been the highest point in the days since the attacks. It's amazing to think that only half-century ago things were quite different. After Lutjens pulled away, the Officer of the Deck, who had been planning to get out later this year, turned to me and said, "I'm staying Navy." I'll write you when I know more about when I'll be home, but this is it for now. Love you guys.

Chris,
Thanks for sharing that. As American's we all know the sacrifices that have been made for us all by others. Farm kids, city kids, outdoors types and book worms alike. I believe that most all of us would do what ever is necessary, to help preserve our freedoms that have paid for with the blood of those that went before.

I have 3 sons Chris, 18, 21, & 23. So I can relate to the tension around your house this Christmas. We'll keep praying for all those who are in harms way, on our behalf.

And I'll be a little prouder, knowing that I know a guy who's son is over there.

I hope that the holidays go well, and that the New Year is full of health, prosperity and blessing.

I just hope those kids all know how proud we all are of them!!!!

Chris, thank you for sharing the letter, it brought a tear of pride to my eyes. You have every reason to be proud of your son as we should be of all our sons and daughters who are serving or have served.
Kind of puts a different view on our German alies. Thank God the younger generations have learned from the mistakes of their ancestors.
Tell your son he will be in my prayers as well as his shipmates.

Happy Holidays and a healty new year.

Thats a wonderful letter!! I am feeling a bit misty myself. I am going to show this to my kids, the 14 yr old girl was a bit jaded by all the stuff on tv in the week after 9/11. When this all went down, she was pissed that all you saw on tv was coverage of this tragedy. But my wife explained to me, she is a teenager, all caught up in her own little world of boy bands and things that teenage girls should be in to. Its hard for me to putmyself in her place, I was so focused on all that was happening.

Thanks so much for sharing that letter, I will pray for your son at Christmas mass.

That is flat out the most moving thing I have read since this whole mess started. Had to fake a sneaze here at work as to not look like to much of a fool.

Thank you for sharing.

Sluggo,

That is a touching letter yet. You sure have a lot to be proud of with your son. We here at my place will keep him in our prayers. That sent chills down the back of my neck, and added a tear to my eye.
Next time you write him, tell him this is one retired vet, who appreciates what he is doing, and because of young men and women like him, we can continue our freedom to choose what we are going to do tommorrow. God Bless Him, and all our men and women in uniform!

MF..Sure I remember! That was at South Shore launch. You even pointed us in the right direction since that launch was new to us. By the way, thanks, we did catch fish!
I remember what that first Christmas without both kids at home was like..just let your pride overcome your sorrow! When my son was in training at Great Lakes, my wife, daughter and I flew out so we could spend Christmas together in a hotel room! I wish you and your family the best this Holiday Season. Your son will be in our prayers as well! Good Fishing, Sluggo (Chris)
