All of the new hand auger out there work pretty darn well! The key is a new or freshly sharpend blade.
To keep the blade clean between uses, do this. Right after you remove the wet auger start a new hole. When you feel the blade start to bite give it 4 to 5 more turns and stop. (Don't go all the way through) Tap off any remaining ice or snow from the blade on your boot and you are set.

There's never been an auger made that can compare with the High Velocity Augers being sold by Cabelas.
They were formerly manufactured by Rapala in Finland and marketed by Tanaka Power Equiptment in the USA and Canada but now Nils Master has bought the company and is making a North American push with the augers again.
The haven't been available here for about 7 years but they're plentiful now and worth every nickle !
Also, Cabelas will replace the auger free of charge for two years if the cutting head stops cutting.
No other auger company will even think about a deal like that !
Cutting old holes is like a hot knife going through butter with no hang ups or jamming up.
Once you get used to the two handed operation of the augers, you'll be cutting new holes faster than any power auger on the market through a reasonable amount of ice (up to 20 inches) but if you have a lot of stamina, you can beat them through any thickness
The "screw" of the auger is much taller and much more aggressive than anything on the market and it's welded all the way up and coated with a slippery epoxy paint that repels the water and ice much better than the competition.
If the head of the auger should ice up, there's no need to beat it with your scoop ! Just put the auger into a cut hole and keep it submersed for a minute or two and when you pull it from the water, 90 % of the time, the ice will just spin down the auger and fall off.
A good coat of automotive paste wax really makes the ice fly off !
I've been using these augers since 1986 and they've been great. The paint still looks like new on my original two augers from 1986 !
You may be thinking that i don't fish too often but I'm out there at least 5 days a week and for as long as we have safe ice not to mention traveling to the midwest and Canada.
There's been pictures of Al Lindner using these augers in the In Fishermman magazine in years gone past but they never mention them. (most likey due to contractual agreements)
I will make this offer to you.
If you buy the High Velocity Auger and it's not everything I say it is and thensome, I'll buy it from you for what you paid for it !
Strikemaster tried to copy this auger with their Lazer augers and in the beginning they had the exact same cutting head on them as the High Velocity augers but changed to the current two blade system.
Side by side, the High Velocity auger is the Cadillac and the Lazer is the Pinto.
