I have fashioned a few of my own lures out of Basswood. They turned ok. I tried to model them off of the shad rap, not to sell, just for my own use. Now i am going up to Canada July and i want to make my own little musky killer. Anyone have any patterns that seem to work or have any pictues of lures they have made? I have pictures of my lures if anyone would care to see them! Thanks

I made a few Jakes out of cedar. One with a round lip, and one with a square lip. Both work good, but the square lipped one doesn't wobble as much. I like it's action though. I also made some reef hawgs out of cedar using a wood lathe. You can't even tell they are homemade! I do need to drill and add a little more lead though! It is fun to make lures, and this first batch I just made was a definite learning experience!
Never will I use Cedar for Jerkbaits! Way too light! I am gonna try Oak for them next!
Good luck, and have fun!

You may want to look at hard maple for the weight...it's pretty dense and easy to work with.

Take B Stidham's adivce on the wood - and any other he passes along. He makes some great baits...

I make my own wire baits but just started playing with wood. Check out the TackleMaking.Com forums (http://www.tacklemaking.com/forums/)
A ton of lure builders there (and quite a few of them muskie fishermen) with lots of good advise. The site has a lot of quality info too.

Anyone have any good sugestions for a carving knife? I had this one knife i used from Wal-Mart, a cheap like $8.00 knife and it was great, but i lost it somewhere. I need a good knife, but nothing pricey. Thanks

Be sure to check this Dirks site his baits are wonderful. He even has instructions and stencils on how to make his glide baits. Try them they are the best.

Hi Guys , did ya miss me? lol I make lots of baits . Spinners, Flies, Wood baits like gliders, crankbaits and top water. My specialty is Big Spoons. You can see my stuff at http://fishall.homestead.com/home.html Hows it Hoginating Tim? Tim the Hoginater guy makes some real nice baits too. I have painted some of his stuff. and own several. I use Oak, Mahagony, cherry, Maple, cedar, and Balsa. Different woods for different lure types. I have a new Big Crank coming out that will change the way Big Cranks are made forever. Wood that is.
