Was out muskie fishing a metro lake this evening, saw a couple of decent fish but no takers. As I was heading to the ramp I decided to take a few minutes to fish for bass on a shallow weed edge. I caught and released a couple of fish then a small 3/4 pound fish takes the worm, jumps once, twice, and then the big swirl and it gets really heavy!!!!!! I know right away.... Muskie!!!!!
Now I am fishing with a ten lb. test flourocarbon set up so I know the odds are not in my favor but after 20-30 seconds I am still hooked up, I loosen the drag a bit and am following what I can now see is a 50 inch class fish. I can not see the bass so I know it is inside the fishes mouth, but is the hook in the bass or the muskie?
After about two minutes I put a bit more pressure on the fish it responds with a run and then I feel the bass pop free.... it struggles for a second and WHAM the muskie hits it again. This time the line parts and thats that. I see the fish again and try to get it to go on a large tube rigged as a throw back lure but no dice, after all it has a pretty good meal already in its mouth......
