I did a search on topwater baits to see what's popular. However, couldn't find much in the way of recommendations, mostly discussions on specific baits. I'll be heading up to Lac Seul mid July. I'm light on topwater baits, so I'm looking to get a couple. I love it when a big fish slams a topwater bait, so I would appreciate recommendations on some good topwater baits for musky/northerns. I'm also thinking some noisy ones might be good to try after sunset.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Thanks, JohnH

You cant go musky fishing without a Hawg wobbler, topraider, and a giant jackpot or Doc.

For colors it doesnt really matter as long as its black. :)

Hope it helps... Good luck.

Let us know how it went.

BTPF hit it right on the head! Those three are probably the best 3 topwaters. Personally, I like the topraider. Easy to use, and casts great.....plus lots of strikes!

Don't forget about the Top Walker... that's my favorite.

The topwalker is number one in my book. Best hooking surface lure on the market. You can work it fast or slow.

I've seen way to many fish lost on top-raider/tallywacker type baits because the fish clamp down on the propeller, and you don't get a good hookset.

That's easy! For Lac Suel you'll want a Super Topraider, Topwalker and a Doc.

My opinion, if you dont have a black hog wobler you are really missing out.Next a topper stopper in black and white, for those windy days. A top raider or a super top raider to finish off the list and you have everything you need for calm or windy days. Good luck, Muskee Mike

Thanks to all who have generously provided helpful suggestions on this topic. I would also like to really thank everyone for all the information I've learned, just by reading everything on this message board over the past half year. I've very impressed with how willing everyone is to share what they have learned.

Thanks again, JohnH

I like to throw all of the lures that have been mentioned, but my favorite top water muskie lure is a Cisco Kid Topper (yellow) hands down.

I have caught too many on this lure (and located soooo many more!!!) for this not to be my #1 pick.

Always remember with top water... wait for the "pull" before you set the hook or you might end up with a face full of treble hooks!

VIPER!!!
Easy to work, built like a tank with great paint jobs by the one and only Chris the "NOID" Deithart!

I'd have to agree with the viper. I have caught too many on this lure in just two years.

It's a good walk the dog that is idiot proof...and it really is built like a tank. Viper would be number one, and the topraider would be number 2.
Peace Out.

Jackpot moves the most fish I have seen. However, the hooking percentages are not real high.

Top Raider is top choice followed by Jackpot for me.

For prop style baits I really like the Thunderhead by Slammer Tackle. It has the prop in the front of the bait, which I think improves hooking percentage as well.

I also like the top walker (prop in front, bucktail in back)but haven't used it a great deal yet....

For a walk the dog lure, the Jackpot is tough to beat, a dancin' raider may be more durable, but I think the Jackpot is easier to work through reeds...

My two cents....

I have to agree with pal. A good globe that goes "tic tic tic", a creeper that goes "blurp--blurp", and a water thumper that goes "blup-blup".

Nothing is magic, just keep chucking
