There are a lot of private buffalo herds in ND these days, especially east of the Big Mo. river. There are several large heard South of me about 50 miles in fact. Some are friends of the family come to think of it? I drove by a heard of 500 plus on Christmas Day.
I am not sure of all the specifics involved in a hunt from a private herd but I could make a few calls and see?
Buffalo are getting to be big cash business for meat again in the Dakota's. Low fat taisty meat, heart smart, just plain good eating if you ask me. I wish I had my freezer full of buffalo now Eh.
Sure would be a interesting black powder hunt wouldn't it?

Ralph,
Check here: kibler@midrivers.com................or: http://www.kiblercharterfishing.com
Myron Kibler, the current world record holder for largest Saugeye, guides fishermen on Ft. Peck , and hunters around Ft. Peck during the fall. He offers Buffalo hunts.
Contact Richard Mellon for a taped TV show he filmed while hunting Buffs w/ Myron and Mary Beth Kibler.
If you need Mellon's e-mail contact me.

Thanks Terry! Actually the bison hunts will air on Outdoor Channel starting on Dec 31st. Myron and the 7 W run a first class outfit and the 7W has bison on 60,000+ acres and produced the current #1 SCI American Bison. Just a moot point - there are no buffalo in North America, we have bison. Buffalo live in Africa and Asia.
Email me at theoutdoorquest@shaw.ca if I can help in anyway.

Merry Christmas Terry!
Sounds like you had a picture perfect Christmas in the new place. Hope you took a few pictures, be cool to see it some time.
Maybe next year you can get 12 elk on a boat and do the Santa thing?
:D
Happy New Year!

Howdy Richard,
Ya I know the Buffalo vs Bison difference. I actually just fall into the same crowd as most in America and call em Buffalo from time to time....... ;-)
I was looking into a Bison hunt with a rifle, and am trying to talk a friend or two into going. Scott may be one of them. Shhhhhhhh! It's a big secret!!! LOL! I also gotta buy the rifle first....
I was looking to do it for less then the 5 grand price tag I saw at one place. Yes they provided everything, lodging, meals butchering and full ownership of cape/hide/meat. But then I dont know how to cook a Bison head...... :P
I know there are logistics involved with getting the animal from the hunt back home, so I would need to have it butchered there and cart it home, legally, as chopped up as possible. I'd prolly be driving as well, so needing shuttle service from local airport is not needed and is a price I would like to avoid.
Thanks to all for all the info, I will be contacting several based on this thread.
Merry Christmas...........R

I didn't know the difference between bison and buffalo until corrected at the 7W, thought it was a
neat piece of trivia similar to the walleye / pickerel debate. I'm not sure of the prices that Myron
charges, I do know you'd enjoy the trip and the hunt. The ranch is on the Missouri breaks of Fort
Peck and if there is a more wild west setting for a bison hunt I've never seen it. What size gun were
you thinking of using? You may have enough gun already.
Merry Christmas to all! I'm going perch fishing.

Nofish I did some asking around and I was pointed to this site.
This operation is known for huge bulls and many of the present stock bulls are drawn from these herds to build new heards.

Hiya Richard!
Well,unless I can use a 9mm Beretta hand gun or a 20 ga 870, I don't yet have a proper gun! LOL
I am looking at at least a 30-06, but think maybe a 300 mag would be a much better choice.
Have fun.....R

Howdy Ralph!
Sorry I thought maybe you had a '06 and figured you needed bigger. Kim shot her bison with a '06 and Sandi with a .338 mag. Both calibers did a great job.
Good luck Rich
