Whatever you do, don't believe the Minnesota Sportsman article about their so-called great up-and-coming Muskie lakes. They must have made most of that nonsense up. Just got back from a weekend pounding a couple of those lakes in prime conditions and only saw two small Muskies the entire time. If I had spent that much time on Mille Lacs and not seen at least fifteen or twenty fish and boated at least one or two, it would have been disapointing.

I would take those ten lakes they listed and ignore them and head to a proven water like the guys said - Mille Lacs or Vermillion. And don't forget about Leech. It should be turning on pretty soon.

Good luck.

Hit Vermilion - No matter what the weather you can fish it
effectively. You can tuck behind islands or in bays to get out
of the wind or brave the waves for great action at the reefs.
The same can't be said for Mille Lacs or Leech. No place to hide!
Both are sweet water but if you got a nasty wind, your in for a
brutal ride if you have to cover ANY distance in ANY boat!
then try to cast in rolling/breaking 3-5ft + waves. Put the life jacket on because you WILL fall out !!

Mother,

Good point. Would anyone like to recommend any lodges to stay on Vermillion? One where the family can have a good time and not to far to good fishing? Preferably one with a swimming pool.:)

I would stay at Voyager Cove resort. It is on the sout west side. No pool, but the other accomodations are very nice.

Big Gun... What lakes did you try??? My brother in-law and Myself take a week in August each year to chase after the "big" ones. We were thinking about trying Baby lake by Longville.

I don't think that every lake on that list is bad... maybe you just had a bad day....but then again it is hard to beat a tried and true lake.

Anyway, your reply may change our plans depending on what lakes you fished....Thanks much and better luck next time.

Many good places to fish on Mille Lacs. I'd recommend getting a MN Muskie Lakes map book. It pretty much shows the best areas. Of course, there is Vineland, Wahkon, Isle, and Twin bays to name a few areas people fish, but there are many more spots and sometimes there are fish on the rocks and in the sand and on the mud flats and just about anywhere. Tough part is trying to find where and when the fish are feeding on a particular day.

Good luck.

Mille Lacs is unique in that you can really fish just about anyplace! As of late, many people are finding out that the muskies are moving offshore more. The fish are roamers and follow the baitfish. I had a funny conversation with a walleye angler out there the other day. He claimed that he was out on the five mile gravel on the south end and had muskies coming up over 25-30 feet of water and hitting his 20" walleyes he was reeling in!!!!! WILD! He also claimed to catch a 46" northern and two smaller muskies while fishing leeches on a spinner rig! If you have the dough, and want to really see what mille Lacs muskies are all about, talk to a guy by the name of David Bentley. He used to guide out of Eddy's resort, he may still. Otherwise I know he lives in Onamia. He knows Mille Lacs like no other person. Worth the money. Some notable areas are of course the North end sand and weedbeds, the rocks around agate bay, 3 mile reef, doe island area, Hennepin Is., Isle Bay, Wahkon bay, Vineland bay, indian point area, I really like Rolands Bay and (not as many guys fish it BTW), even parts of wigwam bay have given up fish I guess. The topwater action on ML can be awesome when the conditions are right for it. On ML, something Dick Pearson once said really hits home, "If you do what you always did, you get what you always got!" SO, change it up often and don't get locked into one pattern for too long. Cast-n-blast

We were on a couple central MN lakes. I'm sure there are good Muskies in there. Just hard to find them. Maybe another day and another time...

Back to Mille Lacs this weekend.

Come on now big gun those lakes could have not been that bad if you wont tell what one/ones you were on.

I hope you had good luck this past weekend.

BTW on our fishing week in August we do plan on hitting Baby lake, Woman, Little Boy, Igadona..sp?, Wabado..sp? If anyone has any advice on where to try on some of these lakes it would be much appreciated. Thanks for the replys in advance.
