View Full Version : bulldawg mod?
Hey I have a 9" version of the bull dawg and was told by someone that if you make the head a blockk by trimming it down a little bit it will give it a wobble. I did this and it doesnt do anything more than when I first bought. Tell me something did I ruin this bait. (It has the lead peice stickin out the front)

anon,
You said that it has the same action, so I am pretty sure you didn't ruin the bait. I have heard of people modifying the hook hangers and beefing them up, and melting new tails on that were bit off, but your mod is a new one to me. Some people only get a couple fish out of a Bulldawg before they retire them so I wouldn't worry too much about the mods you made. I personally don't mind that they aren't as durable as some other baits as they flat out catch fish. It is in my opinion a small price to pay to put fish in the boat.

thanks Jimmy,
I have come to one conclusion though. A slow moving smaller version of this bait has to be a little dangerous. Should I from now on only throw magnums? I have heard storys of muskies absolutely devoring the smaller ones taking it back into the throat area. I know like a smaller biat like a bucktail if you get in to much trouble in the throat area its a possiblilty to pull it carefully out the gill plate but not in the case of a bulldawg.

e14,
My biggest fish of this season came on a smaller Bulldawg. We couldn't even buy a follow for 2 days, so I told Shovelhandle that we should hit the big fish spot and slow things down with some jigging. The second cast netted me a 44 incher! I love it when a plan comes together. The fish did inhale it. Only the tail was sticking out of the mouth. The baker hookouts and the bolt cutters did the trick though, and she swam off fine. In this particular case, the fish were so tight lipped, I didn't want to throw the magnum size.
If you get a chance go to the Chicago Muskie Show and look at the Gordon Griffiths booth. Some buddies of mine are just back from the UK with their SoftHead H e l l tail. These are similar to the Dawgs but are in 2 parts so you replace the head or tail. They also seem more fish friendly with a treble and single hook only. I've already modified mine, they're wired through and it's easy to change weights, hooks etc. I'm now trying a single hook through the back o make them more weedless. I think Moore's lures deals with the company.

Sometimes this works but not always,,,cut a slit like you would when carving a mouth for a pumpkin in the front of the bulldawg,,then push the rubber back so the lead weight slighly pokes through I think it causes ressistence and then wobble,,dosent always work but try it on an olddawg or one you no longer like
